Watching a bmx video yesterday and saw one guy try a 360 of a hugely long stairset with no helmet and no brakes. he got it badly wrong and smashed most of his front teeth out was bleeding from the ear and face. another rider says 'oh well that is part of bmx' What???
Another guy smashes he head on the ground so hard and then gets up and has another go without a helmet. One of the riders was wearing a cap that would fall of after pretty much every trick. if your hat keeps falling off, maybe don't wear it you fool!
Almost every rider had no brakes, bombing around cities and uni campuses with loads of people about, wearing no helmets.
I understand that there is a certain fashion element to it, but this stuff just seems daft!

I used to ride bmx as a kid and still think the racing is awesome, but no brakes for street riding and guys doing backflips without helmets seems a bit far fashion wise.

I've done it. It's cool. It'll teach you more about bike handling than any skills course. Try it. I've even gone urban riding on an MTB. Open your horizons. 🙂

You're not going to last very long if you fall off all the time like that. Either you learn fast or give up. I thought most of the top riders like Danny Macaskil claim they have hardly any major injuries so maybe you should try to do things in small steps. I can remember thinking it would be fun jumping off a trailer being driven at 20mph as I ad seen it on the TV. Strangely enough my legs were not fast enough and it kind of hurt.

BMX rules. I'll agree that I'm not keen on the no brakes thing in public spaces but most people riding no brakes are pretty cautious around people. There is defiantly an element of fashion.
Helmets are and always should be a personal choice.

I like BMX I also think road riding has a place as a training aid and looks like fun 😀 but all these idiots trying shit they've never done before without armour is just dumb.
There are enough accidents and injury with the armour never mind without it!

Check out "Nike-The Pool" on You Tube. I don't ride a BMX but I can't help but admire anyone who can ride like this. If these guys can look cool in helmets then what's stopping your average Joe on the street from wearing one? Not sure it's much of a fashion statement having a caved in head.

jedi - im not sure about that in BMX, a few friends shoot for various bmx publications and it has never been mentioned or been a consideration on shoots. Also have plenty of friends that are regularly publicized, a helmet reducing money has never come into it.
As for the OP, they accept the risks, what's wrong with something if you accept the risks? It would be like not MTBing because it can be potentially dangerous.
Part of what makes BMX great is how relaxed an attitude toward it is. You don't need to think about it, you don't have to prep for it, you just get on your bike and go. Whether it be middle of the night or the middle of winter, you don't need a good location, or have to go far, flat tarmac will do, if you want to ride, you just pick up your bike and go, no restrictions. Not having to prep with safety equipment or clothing, bike cleaning or gear fettling. It just adds to the lack of restrictions it has.

Same here, I still really want to get back into it, just need to find the right bike. It's the ideal "extreme" bike discipline for round here as we haven't got any mountains but a few good skateparks and trails spots 🙂

Most trails bikes have a rear brake. For street you don't really need brakes as you don't always go very high speed. Keeps the bike quieter and more hassle free as well. And it looks better 😛

really liked that Race BMX vid but the guy riding has only one brake and by the looks of it probably doesn't even use it in the entire video.
