[Closed] Blinded by sweat - do those bands work?

I am quite possibly the sweatiest person in the World and often end up with stinging eyes in the middle of a ride, usually when the power of sight woud be useful. Now South Wales is getting back to its normal equatorial climate this is a problem that will only get worse.

A Buff or cap is out as I'm sure it'll be to hot so do those bands that channel sweat away from your brow work? Any recommendations for one to go for or avoid or shall I just go for a Bjorg/Mcenroe-style towelling band?

I found a Gutr works reasonably well but the abuse I receive is constant and tbh, deserved, it looks RIDICULOUS.

A buff works really well under your helmet. Just leave one end hanging down the back rather than doubling it up and it'll wick off all the sweat without overheating you.

Buff seems to generally make me cooler on hot rides and keep the sweat out of my eyes.

Took a good lot of testing to make sure I wasn't just believing the hype 🙂

I can't pull off headwear at the best of time so something that looks like a condom ring is asking for trouble.

Buffs are superb. I'm never without one for proper riding.

Merino ones are teh shizz (as de yoot dem say) if you're a sweaty blighter. No stinky when sweaty! 🙂

When its hot i have 3 halo bands on rotation get on that ties together as they stretch a bit. Buffs ok but sweat still gets in eyes. I try to plan rides that pass streams/ water traps to soak the buff in duringvthe hot week we get.

Halo headband works for me, and I sweat a lot! Gets covered by my helmet, too.

buffs work fine, never been too hot with one.
you could go for a cycling cap, under your helmet?
You can get a cap from prendas for £3.95, if you can wear lampre colours 🙂

The Urge helmets with the extra bit of padding that sticks out work really well.

I had a local seamstress make me a few headbands from some cotton sheet I had, they work brilliantly, and cost next to nothing (she has labour rates similar to peoples expectations of a cycle mechanic).

Buffs work well for wicking sweat away, I always wear one when I'm riding in Greece in summer temperatures. I use one here to keep me a bit warmer.

One of my riding buddies is the UK distributor for Halo Headbands.
They sponsored our team to ride the Big Dog last year so I should give them a shout out!

Buff, worn long. I'm a big fetty swucker, and have no hair, so either a buff or a zandana for me.

Sweat gutr! They do work, although a certain level of abuse is pretty much inevitable unless you only ride on your own...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Seems to be a lot of love for the Buff so I've just ordered one and if that doesn't do the job then I'll give the Halo band a go.

I don't like the buffs, or cotton cycling caps for summer use, I find they just feel damp, sweaty and horrible for the whole ride. Giro do some nice wicking peloton and ultralite cycle caps which I find much better.

Assos also do some non peaked summer underhelmet thing.

I use a Buff, with one end hanging down the back.

When living in the US I used to regularly ride a bike in temps of 100F+.
I found that conventional sweat bands just held more and more sweat. A lightweight cotton cycle cap worked well (I really liked the old Z-Peugout ones in TdeF yellow), but all the ones in the UK are of a far heavier cotton and don't work.

Buff here too.

Really not as hot as you suppose.
The end hanging down at the back also helps to keep the sun off my neck on those rare sunny days.

I use a Halo too for riding rollers in the garage, they really work - keeps sweat out of your eyes better than a buff (I have both) - I find the buff makes my head too hot.

Interesting suggestions here. Like SkillWill, I find a buff makes me sweat more, so I like the idea of the halos. I still cannot cycle for more than about 20 mins before glasses are so steamed up as to be un-usable - tried wax, washing up liquid, sprays etc and none work perfectly.

Well yeah a Buff won't wick very well when "riding rollers in the garage" but for actual cycling outdoors it works very well.

Single layer, bandana or pirate-style, with a tail at the back.

Just fold a buff up twice and use it as a headband.

i use a sweat gutr in summer, its a great little device, it all but eliminates sweat dripping/hair products dripping in your eyes

it does look a bit odd but as i have my helmet quite low at the front anyways, you cant really see it (plus its clear)

it defo helped me out in the summer/heat (what summer?!?!) last year

I tried the Gutr and didn't really get on with it - not just for aesthetic reasons.

I've tried the Halo bands which are great but most of the time whether it's for running, cycling (under the helmet) or splitboard touring I use a Buff Headband - there's a lot less material and they don't get whiffy!

I was going to suggest that perhaps the official STW Buff might be more appropriate - but that appears to be missing a "Buy" button in the shop, which presumably means it is out of stock?

I use the Halo headbands they work incredibly well for me and I sweat. Buffs are great at keeping you warm but when they get saturated they just drip into your eyes still. Saw them at the London Marathon too and people were raving about them. Halo all the way for me.

A bit of this above the eyebrows should keep the sweat out your eyes.....
