Local bike shop wants £55 to bleed/refresh my XT brakes. I'm not exactly flush with cash at the moment but would like to get out on my bike sometime soon. Is it worth me buying a kit and having a go myself or save up and get the bike shop to do it properly and avoid headaches? I am not a mechanic but have a bike stand and basic tools.

Do it yourself.

Kit and brake fluid is £20.

It's one of the easiest jobs to do - just occasionally a bit messy so best done outside.

Yep, do it yourself, it’s easy! A kit, some time and a YouTube video and you’ll be set…

£55 seems steep

Only curve ball is of your rear brake is internally routed is hard to move the caliper around to get the last few bubbles out, also bubbles can get stuck in funny places like round the BB shell on internally routed frames

Buy this bleed kit from Total Bleed Solutions and do them yourself, it's nice and easy.

Search for Marshy's brake bleed on YouTube. He was the Santa Cruz Syndicate's mechanic, and his gravity bleed technique is very easy.

Actually, here's the link:

But also, I remember it being about 20 quid per end a little while ago, so 55 quid doesn't sound hugely over the top for the work.

If you need a hand, mention where you are and someone might offer to help
