Back in the days of awesome huge bar ends I destroyed a wingmirror on an Escort at about 25mph after the daft bint driving it decided to turn right with no indication.
Specialized bar ends saved my hand!

Is this a troll based on last weeks 'car ran into the back of cyclist but didn't really and cyclist went mental' thread?

Done it once - following a car that is about to turn right and I was turning right as well - the car decided at the last moment that the gap in traffic was too small and slammed on the brakes. I was intending to follow him thru the gap which was plenty big enough so didn't stop in time - ended up sitting on the boot of the car. No damage bar a bruised ego

Yeah, long time ago, cars up ahead stopped fast at a crossing, I braked hard (it was raining), too much water on my rims so nothing happened, SLAM!!!

Old chap got out, looked at the dint in his bumper and at my tacoed wheel, his wife made him give me a lift home and he apologised all the way. 😉

oh aye. Straight into the back of a 206. Completely cleared the car, lengthways, landed on the road in front. Car completely undamaged. Front wheel slightly the worse for wear. Woman driver somewhat shaken by loud bang and fat hairy man somersaulting her car.
My fault entirely. I was slipstreaming her and then I was...um..distracted as she braked, by an absolutely stunning young lady walking along the pavement. Cracking legs.

Took out the back of a pug estate with my moped when I was 16.

Bizzarely, from 30mph the only damage was a 1" crack to my front fairing (nicely covered by my L plate) and a chopped number plate! Ohh, and a very impressive bruise where my hips/abs had taken the brunt of my weight against the handlebars.

Similar excuse to AndyP, why does it never show up in official statistics?

Been there twice. First age 12 on my paper round. Found a Reevox reel to reel tape recorder in a bin and took it home. Half way down King's Gate (steep Aberdeen hill) it swung round and banged my elbow. Went straight into a parked car, over the roof and hit the road hard.

Second was my fault too - not paying attention and ran into a car boot in Edinburgh. Woman was very apologetic despite brake lever scratches all over her boot....

15 years ago as a fit and fast teen I was beaning the Spec. Epic up a hill and ran into the back of a stationary Metro. I saw it a fraction before impact so only hit with the STI unit and recall seeing the faces of the girls in the back as I flew by. Dented their boot, bent my bars and got a load of cuts and scrapes for my inattention. Still have the ghost of a scar on my ankle too. Their was a smudge of red paint on the STI for years after.

I tumbled onto the boot of a Crossfire. Roadworks on a hill, sat at the temp traffic lights in the dark, head down, waiting to pull away.
Brake lights went off, so I leant on the pedal. And stopped! Over the bars onto the boot.
Woman in the Crossfire was really apologetic, but she had to drive off first to get through the roadworks and actually waited up the road to make sure I was ok!
Almost restored my faith in humanity (almost) 🙂

I went into the back of a scaffold lorry that slammed its brakes on to avoid a car coming out of a junction. I was flat out, head dropped a bit and didn't clock it in time. The scaffold bars were sticking out of the back of the flatbed and one grazed the side of my neck on the left and another broke my right collar bone. I broke both wrists on impact and to add injury to injury my front wheel got stuck around his number plate bar and when he set off again not realising I had gone into the back of him, I got dragged down the road for about 30yds before coming detached. It smarted a bit.

The real irony was that I was caning it back home (hence the dropped head) as I was late for a meeting to set up life insurance!

was winging it through a traffic jam a while back lots of room to get by inbetween the cars and pavement...didnt expect the bike carrier on one car though-bike to bike collision. No damage to his bikes most of the impact was adsorbed by my flesh...got up and started to apologise to the driver but he went ape and started chasing me down the road....fairly embarrassing in front of a queue of people! hid in a bush for about an hour...

Twice for me (sort of) the first time i was about 13 and doing a paper round in the dark and went round a courner straight in to the front of a parked van Got off with nothing worse than a dented pride. The second time was a few years ago when riding down a hill an old lady pulled out of a side road realised she couldn't get past the parked cars next to the junction, stopped and i couldn't. that left a dent in her boot and a dead leg for me with a lump on the top of my calf (which is still there). She tried to tell me it was my fault as i lay in the road. I pointed out that she had pulled out in front of me and i couldn't stop in time at which point she said i should get better brakes (I had discs and slick tyres and it was dry) and drove off with that comment.

Yep I've done this. Some time back commuting in Ipswich on a very windy day, head down. I look up and there is a parked car right in front of me, too late to brake and I ended up sprawled across the roof of the car.

No damage other than dented pride luckily

Had the slowest speed bump into the back of someone waiting at a roundabout when I thought he was going to go, so was braking for the white line rather than the back of a car 3m closer. Couldn't un clip so keeled over into the road and was rather suprised when the driver started to apologise to me! No damage fortunatley.
2nd one wasn't my fault, a women in an Astra estate pulled out of a side road and set off the same direction as me. Still not sure how this happened but I slamed into the side of the car, leaving a forearm sized dent. I suspect her two little kids learnt a naughty word or two that day - and not from me either! The noise when we hit was amazing, and once more the driver was amazingly apologetic.

Yep, I dented the boot of a stoopid taxi driver who decided late to do a u-turn on dundas street in edinburgh. Anybody who knows the hill will know its a cracking quick decent where careless speeds of 40+ are easlty do-able. Yes I was being careless, cough.

the crash killed my old harry quinn steel commuter road bike but the dent was football shaped and i was very impressed by my heads efforts! Silly me had had a mtb crash the week before and had sent back the lid for crash replacement, so it was only my thick skull and the pirate bandana that did the dent!

nowt to do with a car but my mate once tryed jumping a skip in town on his bmx he ended up brakeing his collar bone 😆

Once for me, riding home after doing my newspaper selling job at the local engineering works, (Westinghouse). Moving line of cars suddenly stop, me, not paying attentio, ride into back of a Jaguar. Fortunately no damage, except to pride. My step brother has ridden into the back of a couple of cars, out triathlon training. Head down, hammering it, sudden abrupt stop. Bent forks, taco'd wheel, broken collar-bone, multiple grazes and contusions. Clot! 😉

There's a bloke near me who's a quadraplegic since riding into the back of a car in roadie 'full on sprint' mode 🙁

I've had a couple of near misses, one dozy bint slammed her anchors on to TR with no warning, OK I was a bit close, I just managed to scrub enough speed off to bump her bumper. She didn't even notice. Another time I had a load of greasy grime on my rims, pulled up behind my boss at a T junction leaving work, no brakes, swerved around her and shot the junction, luckily there was just enough space in traffic for me to shoot the gap. She wasn't impressed 😳

I've never connected with the boot.

One door aged about 15 on a Claud Butler Kylama, the bike was fine not a scratch. The person who's car it was pretty annoyed even though they had pulled out in front of me.

One bonnet, last year on my tricross when someone 'was let out' of a road to turn right across two lanes of traffic. I (coming down the outside) couldn't see him behind the truck letting him out. Ended up sat on his bonnet with a large bruise on my leg from the end of my drop bars and a slightly bent brake lever/shifter. I'd completely knocked his front bumper off though and he was very irate claiming (like the person above) that it was my fault - which I hold my hands up and say it might have been, not sure on legally who was in the right.

ctzn smith in that situation I think it's accepted that you have a duty to expect that someone [i]might[/i] be coming out and slow down accordingly - possibly shared blame?

cynic al - shared responsibility 50 / 50 has been the case in the past as there is case law on it - but I seem to remember recent stuff has altered this a bit so it is possible to put all blame on the car driver in some circumstances

IS that really shared responsibility? Surely the cyclist doing the overtaking was doing so un-sighted. That could have been a child crossing the road in front of that lorry.

I'm a lot more careful these days...I really wasn't going that fast but it's better to be safe than sorry.

seriously, the only time I've ever known anyone to cycle into the back of a car was when me a mate were racing our bikes home from school. We used to pedal like maniacs down this hill to go a fast as possible and my mate rode into the back of a parked Transit van doing at least 20+ mph. I was laughin' my head off, until I went back up the hill and saw the state of him.

Druidh - yes - shared responsibility but a recent appeal gives more to the driver. The case law is from motorcycles

Powel v Moody is the original case from the 60s which puts it shared responsibility 80 / 20 in favour of the cvar driver to 50 / 50 which is more usual - a friend of mine was involved in one a few years ago that was decided 50 / 50 in court.

The recent appeal is Davis v Schrogin where the car driver was found 100% to blame.

So if a filtering accident came to court now i would expect somewhere between 50 / 50 and 100% car driver depending on the actual circumstances.

It is legal to filter therefore the driver has a responsibility to ensure that no one is filtering before they make their manouvere

Riding a road bike with not the best brakes and not the best traffic!

Once I was riding my brakeless bmx back home when it started to rain... I was taking it super easy but my foot-on-the-tyre brake refused to work and I splatted into the back of one of those Porsche 4x4s. There was a great big CRACK (the bumper I think) and the 4 people in the car all turned aghast at me. I smiled politely, shrugged, and pedalled away as fast as I could...

I've never hit a back of a car, but I've seen a few cyclists hit me in the rear view mirror (well it sound funny to me after a couple of drinks)

I've never gone into the back, but been caught a couple of times on the knee, both times whilst I was going down a twisty road, [s]crossing th[/s]e on the white line.

I"ve seen my mate, going down a steep hill, and then for no reason, drifts left into a park car, made a right mess of his knee cap... a little messy, but turned out okay

Clipped the back of a car, taxi pulled out from the kerb I swerved into middle of road he got ahead, I cut back in behind him just as he slammed on anchors. My right bar end clipped his rear left wing, just managed to ride it out.

I read it as dodging though stationary/slow moving traffic in the middle of the road between the lanes.

Today I mostly' hit a fiesta with my side pannier bag oops.

They were not bothered and zoomed off as the lights changed.

Hmm and I mounted it on the right so cars kept their distance-looks I need to keep my distance from cars.

in april this year some muppet decided to turn left without indicating,normally not a problem but he was coming from behind so i couldnt see him, took me off my orange p7,i went over the car, the bike went under,witnesses present, his insurance paid up now i have a santa cruz chameleon, i'm a big fella wieghing in at 19st so pretty easy to spot if you looking where you are going, his excuse was "i did'nt see you".it was 4 in the afternoon on a sunny day!.

i've never done it, but i met a guy working with a friend in a bar. he had bandages all over his forearms, so i asked him why. he had been riding his roadbike at high speed on a sunny day, and looked down to check a missed gear change, not noticing a car parked up ahead in the shade. went into the back of it and through the back window... ****ing ouch - loads of damage and subsequent stitches.

Brand new planet x superlight in the very fetching pixie blue of a couple of years ago, car pulled out from being parked and I caught it a beauty, managed to scratch two panels, break the light cluster,oh and my new frame 😮 took all the skin off both my hands, still, got a new bike which fitted me better. I still tuck my head into my shoulders cycling along the same road.

Similar to AndyP for me, hit the back of a stationary vehicle (was young, flying along at full tilt with no hands and suddenly developed the sneezes) - hit the car, went right over the car leavign a trail of blood starting with the impact on the back window and landed on the road. Owner popped out and apologised for parking there (perfectly legal parking).
