Came downstairs this morning, went into the garage to find the roof peeled open and 4 of the 5 bikes gone. My codeine and defy composite 1 and the Mrs Whyte M-109s and Scott sub 35 commuter have been lifted but they'd left my x and the 2 sea kayaks.
Insurance should be paying out but I can't quite decide what to do now, there aren't any Codeines so are there any decent deals about for a similar bike, 29er 130mm+ travel and fairly burly?
I'm also undecided on whether to do a straight replacement on the Defy for a defy/domane/synapse, wait for 2015 models and get one with discs or sell the x (or strip the x and sell the frame and keep the parts) and put that with the insurance money to buy a tripster atr. I used the x as a rough ground tourer rather than a cross bike but it did get thrown around the woods too. Is the tripster up to reasonable offroad use?
Sorry to hear that, what a nasty shock for you. Take a step back and give yourself time to gather your thoughts.
May be an idea to post up your area and some pics?
Christ you don't have much luck.! That's twice in six months is it not.?
You're right ^. That's shocking.
Yep, 6 bikes in 5 months to the day.
Taken from Shrewsbury.
How did they get them last time? Same method?
Sorry for your loss. I got robbed last year and it's a horrible feeling.
they stole your first lot - they know you replaced them and now nicked the second lot.
they will be back.
Nope last time they were taken off the car at cannock, chopped the cable and broke the carrier locks, this time they peeled the roof.
5 months to the day, that stinks- of the same gang.
I hope the good fellows of the West Mercia are treating as such.
If i can help i will, i'm only up the road.
Cheers
Paul
Secure in the house makes it far less likely they'd try normally as it's a much riskier crime and higher penalty to break into a house, but if they know there's going to be a high value of replacement bikes then they may try it.
Maybe they followed you home once your bikes had been lifted 1st time round so they know where the insurance replacements would be living....
That's awful! Feel sorry for you.
[Dons tinfoil hat.. Is it possible that they stole them from the car> took a note of your number plate> found out your address> come round and stolen post insurance payout? ]
Sorry to hear that
I was told by the police, when a number of my motorbikes were nicked at 6 month intervals, that I'll be on the database of some enterprising and organised criminals, who will leave it 6 months, for you to get your insurance and replacements, then hit you again.
Sounds like you could be in the same position. 😥
Hmmmm... interesting.
I had my garage done over (corrugated roof and ply smashed through) and although there was only an old orange five in there (spare bike), they made off with that and a load of snap-on tools.
I had been thinking it was local neds that had seen me on the bike, but not long before I was at Cannock. Wondering now if it could be the same bunch...
They certainly seemed to have a better idea of what was worth money bike wise than tool wise. Empty hope brake box was taken too!
Gutted for you. Very sad.
A friend of mine had his bikes taken the same way, they came in through the garage roof, twice, about I year apart.
New alarm system, with passive sensors seemingly avoided. Door was not opened so the trip didn't activate there either.
The new 'ceiling' in the garage has been installed rather haphazardly with a very large amount of very long nails, not all necessarily going into the rafters.
Any scrotes trying to get in now should get a dose of tetanus at the very least.
Happened to my garage roof too. My MTB lives in the house now even though garage is super strong now.
I got an inbetweener bike while I waited to work out what I wanted to buy with insurance £. The Pitch got me out felt like my bike and made me happy.
Sorry to hear of your (second) loss. Have been there and felt the shock of an empty garage. Hold out for 2015 models and consider your options. I assume that the garage is not part of the house. In that instance, I'd now be looking for other storage options, I'm afraid.
Really sorry to hear that. Doesn't sound like the two thefts were connected so I wonder if it's another example of thieves looking for cars with bike racks outside houses? Expensive carrier on view = bikes worth nicking.
We got a warning from two police in the peak district which I posted here so thought it wouldn't hurt to add a reminder - http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/police-warning-about-bike-thefts-in-the-peaks-and-manchester-areas
Sadly though, I guess if these people are determined then they'll get them somehow.
How tall are you? http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/shop/factory/ex_demo/2014_five_29_pro_x_large_apple_green
Codeine should come back in stock.
Good god that's awful! Makes me shudder just thinking about walking out to my garage and the bloody roof being peeled off! Exactly the reason why I pay £75 a year to keep mine in a mates motorhome on a secure caravan site, had 4 stolen each time from my garage, scum bags!
Where abouts in Shrewsbury are you Mr Hoppy? I work in Copthorne and will keep my eyes open for them. Have you any pictures?
By shirehall need to get onto a proper putter to get photos uploaded.
Can't b***dy believe it! When are we as a society going to actually get "Tough" on crime and start bringing these scum to some proper justice. It's simply easier and less hassle for them to just nick stuff than get a proper job, as our laws now seem to protect the criminal more than the victim.
Unfortunately, the last owner of my house did some shocking DIY wiring in my garage, leaving loose wires all over the place. Lets hope some thieves don't try to get in through the roof, eh...........
It'd be nice if the police gave a toss mostly.
That happened to me. Full insurance payout meant I had a lot of money to spend on bikes all of a sudden. And you know what, it was not at all as much fun as it sounds.
First thing I did was walk down my LBS and grab a general trail bike so I could get riding (Orange 5 as it happened, simply because they had a good rep and the local shop with all the stock was an Orange dealer). Ordered a road bike from someone that could get me trade price.
Then I spent ages agonising over the XC race build, and bought upgrades for the 5 selling the OEM kit. Pain in the arse really. The easiest part was the Patriot that I ordered in with specified upgrades - the limited selection of Orange upgrades made it easy. It's not been changed since!
Similar happened to me 3 months ago. So far I've only replaced one of the 3 bikes taken with a mid price hardtail - something just to get me out.
I've put security lighting around the house, put a PAS24 multi-point locking door on the garage rear access, bought some of those Enfield locks for the up and over door, concreted in a ground anchor inside and tomorrow getting the alarm extended out to the garage.
Only then will I feel happier about buying something nicer.
Sorry to hear this - not nice at all.
As others, I'd sit on it and have a think about what you want before pushing the button on replacements.
Interesting that my local crime reports states that a shed has been accessed by means of cutting a hole in the roof and the thief tryied to steal a bike that was a replacement for one that had been stolen by the same means earlier in the year. Thankfully the replacement bike was bolted to the floor.
Given these guys go to the extent of going through a garage or shed roof, it's very likely it's planned on the basis they've seen you with the bike(s) or a follow up from a previous theft expecting replacements. This isn't your average scrote or a junkie looking for something to sell for drugs, this is organised.
Other thing to be careful of is advertising your bikes to the world on a car rack.
There have stories for ages about being followed home from trail centres, though I've never seen evidence of this. I do wonder though, and it's possible to just observe the car with bikes and trace the owner through the registration.
It's crazy that bikes can cost as much as a car, and they'll go to a lot of effort to nick the bikes but not the car. Stolen car is of course much harder to dispose of for them and carries higher penalties if caught. Nicking bikes the penalty is almost nothing. Lowest risk crime in Britain.
Bad news, been there myself and it's really horrible.
Since you ask about replacements, my advice from my own experience would be get a cheapish ht for the winter and maybe a second set of wheels for your CX.
Then take loads of time working out what you want, and what you really need. Ie. Don't fall into the trap of having to have all nice things because you had nice things stolen.
And whatever you do, don't let your insurance company talk you into taking replacements from wheelies!
nasty business!
whereabouts in shrewsbury? (vaguely!) still got a few mtb mates back there who should probably keep an eye out.
and my parents, although i doubt they'd want my mum's shopper.
Bad luck dude 🙁
The Tripster is well up for off road use!
Sorry to hear about this OP.
Hope you get some justice from this, and some new bikes, and somewhere 'safe' to store them.
Lets see if this works then.

Sorry to hear about your bike theft that stinks. At least the Codeine is back in stock once again..
good old on one. never let the chance of a sale pass them by :d
Get some details around to the shops, thieves have been known to drop by with the bikes asking if they'll buy them.
Whereabouts in the 'Shire are you, as there seem to be loads going recently? (I work at The Trailhead)
