After recently having my bike dismantled and the forks brakes and other stuff nicked (if anyone has tried to sell you a set of OEM fox 32 Talas they might be mine ๐ ) I've been looking at security tagging and there seems to be quite a few different ways of doing it. For instance registering on Immobilise or Bikeregister and having UV pen marks or funny looking electronic tags.
What does the STW massif use to deter thieves or mark their property?
Spray them unusual colours..... one of the reasons I have a bright pink dh bike... its quite distinct..
Spraying them doesn't stop the next guy who steals your DH bike from spraying it though >.<
The frames are the last things the thieves want! Why try and sell a stolen frame and risk getting caught with it when you can sell all the other parts as second hand?
Other than making your bike an "unusual colour" does anyone use any UV marker pens etc on their things? I was 90% sure I saw my forks on ebay soon after the theft, but as I couldn't 100% prove they were mine, there was nothing the police could do.
Engrave a name but not post code on the various bits,
Immobilise is used by the police, Bikeregister is a great idea (much more easy to use than previous initiatives like Datatag) and likely to become much more widespread if rumours I hear about forthcoming partnerships are correct.
Writing down the serial numbers of your frame and parts is the bare minimum and an absolute must if you ever want to see it again.
If you've got access to a Dremel, chemical etching or a letter punch kit then you could add your name to an unobtrusive bit of the frame, inside of the cranks, frame dropouts, underside of fork brace, etc. (Disclaimer: I'm not sure what effect using a letter punch would have on alloy parts. Probably not advisable!)
You could desticker your bike and get new decals made up (like Peter Poddy's "Pikey" forks from a couple of years back). Yes thieves do change parts, alter stickers, etc, but it all acts as a deterrent and they love a visible mainstream brand name (Specialized and Giant top the bike theft charts by some way in Bristol).
I wouldn't bother with UV marker unless it was paint-based, as you'd probably remove it by accident the first time you jetwashed your bike.
Definitely register with Immobilise. We have had 2 bikes returned by the police after they were nicked and they searched the database.
Talking to the police it is amazing how many people don't either both to report their bike as stolen.
I always try to lock my bike near CCTV and always with a bloody big lock. Nothing will stop them if they want your bike, but if you can get images of them then there's a good chance the Police will know who they are. More often than not the Police know all the scallies in an area.
I wrote my postcode underneath the rim tape when i built my wheels.
