Might be looking to buy a hardtail for my ever-growing son. Either new bike or from frame build.

Whats the most capable vs value options people have come across?

Budget?

Scandal? Jut wait for the On-One random price generator to be on in your favor!

Or if you can find the bits to build it cheaply:

I reckon you could at least match the GX build with something like SLX M7100 and a Yari.

You've got to have a rough price range in mind for anyone to sensibly answer that! Also, do you want an XC racer, or 160mm monster? Answer won't be the same in all cases.

For me, the Whyte 629 offered best value in the £1k to £1.5k range of 29er, modern geometry bikes recently. One of the Orebea Laufey's was second. Had things like a dropper post and 4 pot brakes as standard that some others didn't get, or were a few hundred more expensive.

At a lower price the Voodoo bizango, I think it's about £600.

Yes sorry it was a rubbish brief off the top of my head! It's for eldest son (pretty steady rather than rad) and occasional wife use. So requirements would be decent weight, probably mid-way between XC and gnarpoon in terms of geometry.

To be honest I'd consider 27.5 also if there's some bargains but thought a 29er would help roll-over confidence for them........nothing to do with me not having one in my quiver no no definitely not that....

I bought a Canyon "Grand Canyvon" for my wife in one of their sales last year - it's a great spec alu 29er: SLX and XT kit (slightly lower spec brakes but still good) and Rockshox - nice light XC/trail bike - was just under £600 - I was very surprised by how nice it was when it arrived.

I would 100% buy another
