For some folk with some riding styles Jambos methods dont work. For some it does. Myself I always make an effort to be them in - but all that is required is a series of stops - preferably while pedalling downhill.

The pads need to get very hot. You do 3 things - conform the pad to the disc, cure it under heat and pressure and smaer a microscopic layer of pad materail on the disc. Forget old wives tales about pouring water, coke or mud onto the discs. wter creates thermal shock, coke contains phosporic acid - good for cleaning contaminated discs but will remove the boundary layer - ditto mud

A series of stops sounds like a ride to me. I might not actually stop each time I brake but I bet the pads don't know that. They still get nice and hot.

dont bed all pads in with a series of stops to roast them. some brands want you to take it easy to begin with so beware and read yer manuals! as usual.. dont go by everything you read on the net.

Has anyone on here had new brake pads in their car?
Can they please publish the instructions that the garage gave them with regards to bedding in?

"and smaer a microscopic layer of pad materail on the disc" wrote TJ.
What happened to the layer left by the old pads? Did it disappear when the old pads were taken out?

Good point brainflex. I guess if they are the same material then thi bit don't need to happen.

With cars the brakes get up to temperature much more easily - so will bed in in normal use unless you are using performance pads

Same as jambo.
If that's too simple, try soaking them in ferret piss for 24 hours then baking in the oven at 220C for 90 minutes or until your kitchen smells of roasted piss.

Find a long steep hill, and sprint down it dragging the brake to be bedded in, keep in the middle ring/middle gear combination, after about 20-30 seconds the lever feel changes and the pads are bedded in.

It must work as even superstar organic pads used to last me 6 months in the Peaks over the winter which if you believe the hype will kill a new set of pads in one decent of the roman road.

Apparently you can 'glaze' them doing this, but I've run them so hot the backing plate changed colour (you can see where the airflow arroudn the piston has cooled it!) with no ill effects.

take it easy and no harsh braking for the first 100 odd miles.

I use Superstar Sintered pads on both my bikes, (find they work excellently). When I fit new pads I ride down the short hill from my house at speed and brake hard 3 - 4 times, pedalling between braking to get back to speed. Then ride back up and repeat till I can lock the wheel with 1 finger braking, (usually takes only two runs down the hill). Whole process takes about 5 mins and brakes then work perfectly.

For Magura pads, bedding in is important. They've got a forum where they've published a full explanation of why you need to bed in and the exact technique. Basically it's 20-30 stops from 30kmh, as soon as you've stopped, set off again, stop, rinse and repeat.

It really does work as Magura pads last me ages, whereas people who haven't done it have minced through pads very quickly.
