A friend of mine has a Whyte 905 which came with a sram BB30 fitted. He has just seized his 4 BB in next to no time. I have heard of people putting adaptors in that accept Shimano HT2 style external bb. I have done a quick search and can't find anything to do this. Just to make it clear he would like to fit an adapter to allow him to fit a external bb and not an adapter that just allow a HT2 crank to be fitted,
So is it possible to do this and if so what do I need.

As valleydaddy:

Easy to fit. I used a headset tool and a small metal plate. Comes with Loctite. Make sure the grooved side is on the drive side.

Do these solve the problems?

I presume he's got PF30 cranks.

I don't think you can have an external bb and PF30 cranks coz the spacing/axle width is different. I've only seen the above adapters which reduce the spindle down to 24mm (shimano/gpx cranks).

He'll need new cranks, adapter and bb 🙁

The Sram bearing kit is £20 on crc, buy them and be more careful cleaning the bike. Don't directly spray the bb and after cleaning always spray the bb with water replant lube. I managed to get 8 months!

edit - mis-read the question 😳

But as Toons said, I don't think what he's after exists.

My mate is looking to buy and fit a Xt chainset as a replacement and just wants to get away from the whole bb33 thing if possible.
With regards washing his bike , he nows better than to point the hose directly at the bb area.It seems to be wet rides taking there toll on the bb and not riding said bike for a few weeks afterwards. So there must be some form of water ingress inherent with these bb.
Personally if i was after a frame and it had any form of press fit BB i would walk away. 😀

I think BB30 is different to PF30.

I use a PF30 adapter to use HT2 BB cups with XT cranks.

Try the links suggested for the adapters for BB30.

What your friend is experiencing seems no different to my experience with my first few HT2 BB's - I then fitted a Hope, and it's still in today; 6 years and 3 bikes later.

I do though strip, clean and re-grease (not the actual bearings) every few months.

What year 905? If its the 2011 (orange decals) or the 2012 (grey/goldish decals) it'll have the PF30 (as opposed to BB30).

Although it'll maybe say BB30 on the cranks as they are the same size, if you fit HT2 you'll have to use different cranks as has been mentioned and I'm sure you're aware.

I'd be curious to know what brand of PF30 BBs he's been going through to use up four! If he has stuck to SRAM, I'd say give a few another brands (or two) a try before completely ditching PF30. I guess if you already have HT2 BBs and cranks it's not really an issue - otherwise it could prove quite costly.

I have a whyte 905 and a wheels mfg pf30 and have had no issues so far. My SRAM one went pretty quickly though.

Apologies this does not answer your question in anyway.

I emailed hope last year to see if they had a PF30 version, they said they hadn't but were working on it! Wonder how close they are now. Might drop them another mail

Jim,

we imported a set of these.

It was the only way we could stop killing a BB30.
Lovely quality and excellent warranty.

Cheers for all the replies.
I'm certain his is the 2011 version but will check.
I'll check out the links provided.
My mates not that mechanical minded so pre greasing bearings will be alien to him. Also he's really feed up with constantly having bb issue and just wants rid of the whole press fit thing.
