Hi,

Will be going on hols for a week in Barmouth on Saturday and taking the MTB with me. Can anyone recommend any other routes other than these 2 I've found, would prefer a GPX if possible:

http://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/north-wales-mtb-routes/barmouth-pont-scethin/

http://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/north-wales-mtb-routes/the-mawddach-estuary-and-pont-scethin-mtb-route-guide/

I know there is also Coed y Brenin nearby but I'd prefer natural trails from the doorstep and I'm not sure I'll have time to get there.

Think the Pont Scethin route was featured in the magazine a while back.

Thanks guys, both those links are Pont Scethin routes so I guess they are both worth doing?

I'd say yes definitely do it, the 2nd route looks to take you over the toll bridge & up the cycle path along the estuary or the other way round(?), very scenic (it does say that in the description)  flat & not technical but the pub by the toll bridge is nice in good weather

Pont Scethin is a good ride. Various options of where to start. We were recommended to now do the loop anticlockwise in direction. Whilst I've not ridden it clockwise the way we did it looked more fun based on the reaction of people pushing the other way.

What Stuc said.

Anticlockwise appears to get you more techy/rocky descending than the other way. I expected it to be boggy in places but not at all. Great route.

We started at the toll bridge on the Dolgellau side and rode in to Barmouth along the estuary for extra mileage/warm up/nice views. It didn't seem such a good idea on the way back with a headwind, heavy legs and belly full of fish and chips!

Note, that Flattyres  route brings you back down somewhere on the road out of Barmouth up towards the toll bridge. We couldn't see any sign on the ground of the track that the map/gpx said we should be taking, so we ended up going back down the same road we'd climbed out of Barmouth (plus the call of the chip shop was strong).

A while back we did a big ride out from Barmouth that took in Cadir Idris.

I don't have a route plan as it was paper maps but we went across the bridge then straight up and over the obvious bridleways dropping down past the farm at Nant-Caw-fawr. From there was an obvious minor road to the foot of Cadir and up we went.

On the way back down we split off right and stayed high on a track below Craig-y-llyn before a little carry/push to join woods below Braich Ddu and then retraced bridleway/minor roads back to the Last Inn for a pint or two.

The loop looks obvious when you look at a map - took us most of the day as there two big climbs

Another option from FlatTyres would be  http://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/north-wales-mtb-routes/dolgellau-and-rhydcriw/

I just downloaded the Barmouth and Pont Scethin route and it already appears to go in the anti-clockwise direction.
