As we are having a few tyre threads…….Maxxis Rekon

My Maxxis Rekon EXO MaxxTerra 120tpi casing rear tyre has suffered a few punctures lately due to some flinty descents

Now this is on the rear of a 160mm travel, 23kg e-mtb so i was kinda expecting it to happen at some point and has done well up until now, this bike gets used for everything, winter road rides, xc, trail, enduro

I like how light and how well the Rekon rolls but i would like a bit more puncture protection

Was thinking of giving the Rekon EXO+ 60tpi a go and see if that was better

other option is a Dissector EXO+ on the rear (that’s what I've got up front) and I've been happy with this combo up until now

Not looking to change from Maxxis, I've tried other brands over the years and always come back to Maxxis

Any thoughts? is there a Maxxis tyre I've missed that fits the bill?

Is the Rekon 2.4? I’ve only used the narrower ones and don’t really like them. Too fragile. I like an Ardent as an all-rounder. A bit more grip but not really draggy.

I’ve never heard of anyone running a Dissector up front. I’ve used them on the rear but I feel like the outer lugs don’t last quite as long as the DHR (I have no evidence though).

Can't think of a tyre less suited to flinty descents on the back of a 160mm eBike than an EXO Rekon.

I have to agree with the previous comment on the suitability of an Exo Rekon on a 23kg E-Bike for "flinty descents"

I only have hardtails and a light trail bike on non rocky terrain and I've found Exo casings disappointing. Same for the sizing of what Maxxis calls a 2.4 tyre.

Conversely, when Banana Industries had them at £20 each, I picked up a pair of 2.6 Exo+ Maxxterra Rekons and have found them to be way better than a 2.4 Exo I tried in the past. The bit of extra casing and volume makes them much more resilient they grip better too. I do have them on my hardtail for summer riding though, not sure they'd translate to a full e-bike.

As a motor is pushing you anyway, maybe look at whatever the fastest rolling Double Down casing tyre Maxxis make?

You’ve got a long travel e-bike with rekons? Silly. Get something more suited, double down DHR2 or in exo plus?

Put the Dissector Exo+ from your front wheel, on the back. Put a fresh  DHR2 Exo+ 3c on the front. Sorted. 

 

 

(It seems a bit bonkers that you had Exo+ on the front and Exo on the rear, thats the wrong way round. 

 

Softer rubber, lighter casing, most aggressive tread on the front - less soft rubber, tougher casing, less aggressive tread pattern on the rear is the generally accepted splt)

tbf, the op talks about using the bike for road spins, so I can see where the ask for a fast roller comes in - but it's kind of too much to ask of a tyre to be an enduro/eBike tyre and a fast road tyre and everythign in between

As others have sad, I'd even be wary of EXO+ for an ebike rear

Something like a Dissector Double Down would be on my list, for sure. There used to be options for semi-slick rears in decent casings, like Super Gravity Rock Razors, not sure any of those are still about. @Northwind is the resident semi slick expert

Found one - and it's cheap too, and Maxxis. On the narrow side, but I'd have this over the Rekon for sure

@reeksy yes its a 2.4 Rekon with the supple 120tpi casing, Dissectors come on a few complete bikes on the front wheel, never had any issues with mine on the front hence thinking of having one on the rear also

 

Cheers for the other replies, there’s no way I'm going back to DD casing, ran them for years (mix of Assegai, DHF, DHR2 & High Rollers) yes they give more puncture protection but they really do make a big difference on how long the battery lasts and how sluggish they make the bike feel, since I've been running the Dissector and Rekon that bike has felt much more nicer to ride so I'm not going back to DD tyres, The Rekon’s EXO sidewall casing hasn't been an issue its more the tread area punctures are happening, hence the thinking of changing to an EXO+ Dissector as the EXO+ casing offers more bead to bead protection

The e bike is a bit of an do it all bike and is used for riding with two different groups of mates who don't have normal bikes, one group is purely nice and easy off road rides and the other is a bit more enduro/trail focused) hence needing to find a happy compromise, i have normal bikes (down country bike & a hardtail along with a gravel bike and road bike, which all tend to be saved for nice weather riding) and have been happy with the tyre choices on those

Are you using the original Dissector or the newer Gen 2 version btw? I hated the lurchy lean-in of the former, but the new ones look quite good.
