Have recently moved and my commute has changed from old railway gravel trails to mainly hilly tarmac/roads. My steel gravel/CX bike is okay but the tarmac around here is knackered and my wrists aren't happy.
I also need to be a bit more sat up rather than heads down hammering away.
My old Kona Smoke commuter is great for this but knackered.
Im looking towards Cannondale Badboy/Cube Hyde range of bikes;

but not happy with either the Cannondale spec/price or the Cubes weight. Is there anything else in the 'hardcore' city type bikes? (Whyte are too small - im 6'6")
Slightly different but I went for a specialized crosstrail, I went for the comp disc version which is a top end one before they get to carbon. The forks are heavy but the rest of the bike is spot on. I use down the horrible bham canals and a45 cov road as a work tool its a good bike.
I had a Cannodale Bad Boy in about 2012. Found the frame to be very harsh/stiff.
^ ideally i'd get a Cotic Roadrat in XL....but they dont make one and I cant find any other flat bar steel commuter thats a bit 'edgy'.
Probably way more than you want to spend but there's always that Cannondale cross/gravel bike with the lefty suspension fork. The Slate I think.
I get to ride lots of this sort of bike, and i'd strongly recommend you at least try an Orange Expresso, in spite of it's Sram kit, it's the only one that I immediately feel at home on, fast, responsive, comfortable, and just feels right to me.
The slate is a bit spendy - my budget is £1k max. The Orange looks good - but isnt in their current line up.
I'd look at Evans own stuff. Pinnacle brand models Lithium and Neon I think. The Lithium is pretty much a rigid MTB
Kona do the DEW. Looks like the Dr Dew is 1x11 (is this a good or bad thing?) for £900. There cheaper options as well
Giant do the ToughRoad I think. Again a rigid MTB type thing
