My sister has lived in Amsterdam for 25 years. I have visited a fair few times. What do you want to know?

whether it's a nice place, are the people nice, cost of living sort of thing.

I've been 'encouraged' to apply for a job there. Would mean staying away from home & the wife though.

Very cosmopolitan and everyone speaks English - this makes it easy for non dutch to live there.

Myself I don't particularly like the city that much - big, noisy, crowded. However its better perhaps than many capital cities. Teh dutch can be terribly smug.

Its an expensive place to live especially if you are converting form pounds to Euros

Cheapo flights available, cycling is good in a non gnarly way

I lived in Amsterdam. There's so much you could write.

It's a good place, the people are great, and it's not just a big Red Light district. There are some areas to avoid like any big city.

As far as bikes is concerned - you'll notice everyone has one, and it's definitely the best mode of transport in the Centrum, where car's are practically outlawed. Forget about parking, even outside your home it will get towed away.

Amsterdam - as far as hilly, countryside off-road stuff - forget about it. BUT... trains are very good and if you head South East you head towards Ardenne country - and that is a blast.

I lived there for 2 years, and loved it.

I do speak Dutch,( well Afrikaans) so thats always gonna help, and yes, they do look at you differntly if you can..

I wouldn't have said its anymore expensive to live there, than any big city in the UK.

The dutch as a race are great people, and well, given a chance, I'd be back there tommorow..

For MTB??

Head towards Valkenburg...

Beautiful part of the world.

Used to live in Leiden for 4.5 years (on the main train line between Amsterdam, Schiphol and the Hague).

One of the few places I've lived that I'd consider going back to.

Not the best place for mountain biking, but superb for cycling in general (all UK town planners could do with spending a grand or so for a business trip there). Certainly no shortage of places to go out on a friday night.
