I'm wondering about approaching my local council with the idea of getting a BMX track built. There's one 20 miles away in Gateshead that's apparently being renovated, but nothing nearer. If British Cycling want future champions to have exposure early on, then small local tracks are required aren't they, to get kids interested?

I know there's nothing like "messing about on your bike in the woods", which leads to bigger things, but if you don't know that the biogger things exist, you'll never get anywhere. Likewise, I like the idea of kids seeing that BMX isn't just skateparks and dirt-jumps, there's an element of physical training and competition/reward mixed in with the fun and adrenalin of jumps and stuff.

Any comments and suggestions of who to contact and what to say and what to do are appreciated.

Speak to Steve Taylor at www.biketrack.org and he should be able to give you some info about how to approach local councils with a view to getting a track in your area.
