If so - what did you need to buy to facilitate it?
Any headset for a 1.5" steerer/frame fits. If you have a fork with an 1 1/8" steerer then you will need a reducer headset, if you have a fork with an 1.5" steerer then you don't and if you have a nu-skool tapered steerer then you will need both to mix and mash (or check out the headset in Fresh Goods on the front page which looks like it does all these jobs).
The only complication is that the tops/adjusters of some forks might hit the frame so having a headset with a larger lower race might be needed depending on your forks, a Cannondale dealer can supply such a thing (they came stock on some Prophets with Pikes) or Hope/On-One do something similar.
Hi Rob
I've literally just done this
Get a hope 1.5 reducer headset, very nicely made and has a 10mm step on the bottom cup to avoid fork tube interface.
If your anywhere near Chesterfield, I know a man who will do you said Hope headset for £70 Fitted
which I believe is a cracking deal
I have recently fitted a Hope stepdown headset to a Prophet, went in just fine!
why do hope say its not for cannondale?
IMO it is because they go past the pretty short maximum insertion levels designed by Cannondale so Hope cannot guarantee the cups will go fully into the headtube without fouling on something.
do they go all the way in tho?
They usually do. I've only heard of a couple of occasions where there was a bit of overweld that needed clearing out to before fitting a normal reducer headset or the e13 cups which have the same insertion depth.
Make sure you clear anything out before trying to fit the cups as otherwise the cups may go fully in but be putting abnormal stresses on the headtube welds which could lead to premature failure.
historically Cannondale 1.5 head tubes had shallow cup recesses for their own SI cups, as mentioned above you should be fine.
