FWIW (and obviously Seb can step in to correct me) I'm pretty sure that when Cranked was running the free tee for new subscribers deal there was a big discount on buying a tee for existing subscribers.

that's one way of looking at it. The other way is, the company is saying "we value new customers more than old ones"

You could look at it that way, but it isn't the case. No mag publisher, ever, has come up with a really effective way to reward loyal subscribers. ST has tried really, really hard, though. Credit where it's due.

The way I look at it is this: let the mag speak for itself. Work to improve it, continually. Oh, and don't be a dick (part of Cranked's unofficial, unwritten mission statement).

Subscribers always get a substantial discount on the t-shirts; they only have to ask. It's in the small print, and everything 🙂

Great mag. Have bought issues 1-9 individually, but this thread has reminded me to get a sub.

I subscribe, think it's a great read with awesome photos. A few issues ago there was a story written by someone who got totally lost and ended up climbing up/down a ravine with a waterfall in it, one of the most engrossing bike related things I've read in a long while.

ended up climbing up/down a ravine with a waterfall in it

That's what happens to me every weekend when I try to follow some dodgy tracks downloaded from Strava.

Another happy Cranked reader here since issue 1 😀

Missed the Kickstarter campaign so have bought each one individually( one twice, by accident 😳 ) as I have a one Sub rule (the other one is about to finish). So good to have a magazine that you savour in your own time and doesn't become out of date within a month. No blatant ad-bombardment or product placements (although I have noticed the ad count creeping up), just great pictures and articles about riding bikes for fun and adventures.

I suppose sticking to your principles is probably the right thing to do since they cant afford a £2 t shirt when they need to pay for a full restoration and custom graphics of a vintage VW van.

They need to advertise in a creative way, the story of that van deserve an article in itself! All the other magazines have a van or more, at least this one has a great story behind it that relates to the MTB world. When they give me articles like:

A few issues ago there was a story written by someone who got totally lost and ended up climbing up/down a ravine with a waterfall in it, one of the most engrossing bike related things I've read in a long while.

that jog old memories and inspire me to go out on more then they can easily justify tooting their own horn with a single van that will earn it's keep.

Seb and co, keep up the excellent work 8)

God's balls! I'm about to subscribe, because the mag is ace, I picked it up in a station and it was perfect train reading. Stato, do you want my tshirt?

PS, the answer to "what if everyone else asks for a free tshirt" is piss off, before anyone starts

Not to piss on Cranked's thread but Shredder MTB Zine is another good read, they did a DW co-lab for the fourth issue (yes, DW still exists) and off the back of that I bought the previous three.

From what I can see of Cranked it's very similar in terms of quality. And yes, I will be getting a copy.

I've been reading Cranked since the start. I'm not disappointed about the lack of free tshirt as I don't like it! If it just said Cranked on it i'd wear it, but the magazine for mountain bikers bikers puts me right off for some reason.

Another Kickstarter here and fervent reader in the bath. If I wanted the T-shirt I'd buy one, I don't so I haven't. Loved the stickers though!

I don't think that compares to Cranked in any way, shape or form. While Cranked seems firmly aimed at older 'trail riders', even the name 'Shredder' suggests it's aimed at readers under 25 and everything I saw on their website – including ripped off Death Box graphics and Thrasher logos – does nothing to alter that view; I certainly don't need to be told 'how to dress like a shredder'. I suspect our definition of 'zine' is also at loggerheads.

I love DH and – regardless of the last para – I genuinely wish them the very best of luck, but from me it's a meh.

No, there was an article on ebikes a few issues ago, IIRC.

I've been a subscriber to Cranked since issue 1, and am well happy with it. Not worried about the t-shirts, but the Cranked stickers I received were quite nice.

Even if you hadn't pretty much said you hadn't read it at all I can tell you've not by that response. The "ripped off" logos and such are deliberate (the whole mag style is a tribute to the 80's video magazines). What does "trail" riding even mean anyway, are you talking about casual day out that could well be Enduro if you were getting timed or trail centres? Pretty much everything you have brought up is addressed by Stuz in the first issue. Maybe read the magazine before forming a genuinely misinformed opinion on it or if you don't want to I'll happily give Cranked a read and let you know how they compare.

If we're going with names Shredder doesn't sound any more out there than Cranked whilst Sender just sounds like some pish you would hear a grom talking about (I'm gonna dial that and send it!).
