It's getting annoying now with not really knowing if I have clipped in as I don't feel the engagement and my feet unclip much more easily. I have thought of spraying WD40 around my cleats and pedals or putting washers between my shoe and cleat. What are your hacks?

Got Time pedals here and a good stamp on them normally clears any clag/snow/ice. They don't tend to freeze up and all that because of the way the engagement works (afaik)

Doesn't work so well if you're using Shimano though.

Crank Brothers, stay clear worst I have to do is bast the shoe on the pedal.
Problem you have is there is nowhere for the crap to go when it gets in there, I seem to remember using sticks a lot

Don't unclip.

Use Eggbeaters.

If it's really bad a few engage/disengages in quick succession and a bit of tapping of the shoe against the crank etc seems to do the trick well enough for me.

Other than that it is a matter of never unclipping and walking, I guess.

up the tension so you get a nice positive click when you in.

i only really get the am i clipped in or not feeling when my cleats are worn out .

I'll bumb up the tension, my cleats are brand new. I was practising a DH section lately and it was nerving on steep terrain not knowing if you were secure and not and then my foot would bounce off. I guess I don't unclip in muddy areas then, I'll try WD40 as it works on spades.

Ditto I use time pedals and don’t have an issue

Assuming you're riding M520 pedals or other reasonably mud shedding design, a few clip and unclips when you get going in really claggy mud.

Had a bit of a problem at the Perth enduro a couple of months back, lots of dabbing and really claggy mud, and I did stop to clear stuff with a stick before a couple of stages - generally wouldn't bother in a ride when it's not so critical but it's always an option.. Mates on flat pedals were of course fine.

Avoid stepping in the really gloopy sticky stuff as much as possible.
Stamp on the pedals a few times without clipping in to clear them as much as possible.

Another Time pedal user here, and I can't say I've ever had this issue.
