[#11730663]

Just about to begin building a frame that has a Phil Woods eccentric bottom bracket.

Was measuring/having a nose at the EBB threads last night sizing up to purchase a BB and a loose piece of swarf/the EBB thread spiked my finger. Had a closer look and saw two dark ‘circles’ in the threads.

Removed the EBB and seems it’s been overtightened at some point? Not used/seen one before so no idea what I’m looking at.

In the light it seems at some point the threads have been pushed in and flattened (?) in the same spot where the grip screws (?) have bitten into the shell?

Anyone know if you can still buy them, or better yet fix them/chase the threads?

That's normal for these - the screw has a point on it and it tightens onto the EBB.
If tightened at the thinnest point it can cause this problem.
Try chasing/cleaning the threads - I used a steel square taper BB to do it on mine.
Then if possible tighten on a different part of the EBB in future.

Thnks ajantom. I was about to source one of those as the cranks I want to fit are square taper. Just needed to figure out what spindle length.

Any chance the new BB might jam in there while trying to chase threads?

I suppose there’s a chance that the BB threads won’t need to screw in that far, but haven’t tried one yet.

File the bumps flat and then stick a bb threading tool through it.

^ have a feeling that by the time have purchased large half-round file (?) and bottom bracket threading tool it might be less for a new EBB?

SJS sell Thorn EBB shells for £29, wonder if they would fit?

Damn my cycle toolkit! Cable cutters, hex keys, BB remover and a few spanners is about it 😳

Two things - there’s absolutely no need to be winding in the set screws like that. If the insert fits the shell properly then 5Nm should be enough to prevent any chance of rotation.
Don’t use those horrible pointed set screws either - use proper cup point set screws (like Singular fit), the ones that you use a 4mm Allen key with, assuming they’re M8x1.5 thread.

A friend of mine bought a s/h Dialled Love/Hate and the insert looked as if someone had shot it with an Uzi. Not only were those screws pointed with 13mm hex heads, they were metric fine.
All the better for winding them in and in....

This is why we come here 😎

A friend of mine bought a s/h Dialled Love/Hate and the insert looked as if someone had shot it with an Uzi.

That’s what this is. It was a karma/donated frame and arrived without BB installed. No idea if the shell came deformed or not. Will check against the EBB and try and measure *Edit - just finger-tightened the screws and held up to the light.

No idea what the tolerance should be but there’s a minute gap as can just be seen

I’ve still yet to build it up/fit a BB. Here beginneth the learning. Can’t even find Phil Wood EBB product support at their website

https://phil-wood-co.myshopify.com/pages/support

Any idea where can I get better screws (if I can salvage the EBB?)

Looks like having to invest in a torque wrench also...

Single speed! Supposed to be simple!

What thread are they - M8x1.5mm or M8x1.0mm ?
You can easily get stainless cup point set screws on ebay - cheap as chips.

Depending on what SS ratio you run the EBB will probably end up in a better position than that so the clamp screws are pushing agains a thicker bit of the body.
Try turning the EBB in the shell to see if its that or the shell that's deformed.
Chances are it's the shell that's stretched/deformed.
You can go someway to stop the creaks this can cause by wrapping the EBB unit in PTFE tape and thick waterproof grease before you insert and adjust it. Oh and make sure you put it in the right way round or your BB might try and unscrew its self.
As above don't use bolts/screws with a point on them there's no need and they just damage the EBB.

^ thnks Big n Daft will pm if need to go that route.

Yep, same gap no matter where the EBB is at. Sod it.

Oh and make sure you put it in the right way round or your BB might try and unscrew its self

There’s a right way? 😎

Thnks. Begs the question - you’d think mnfrs/engineers would know this when designing the things!
