I went to fit some Schwalbe tubeless tyres to my new DT Swiss R 460 rims at the weekend after using 1 layer of Stans yellow tape and couldn't get them anywhere near to an air-tight seal.

I've always used Stans rims before and had no trouble, usually inflating a tyre with a tube first to seat the bead, deflating and removing the tyre, then inflating again.

Should I just be adding more layers of yellow tape? Or are there better (cheaper!) alternatives that work with DT rims?

Search for Tesa 4289 on ebay. Apparently very good.

http://www.bird.bike/product/bird-tubeless-tape/

^ works very well. Like it says you can do any rim width really if you triple wrap

Agree on what he eBay stuff. Have done two sets of wheels with it now with no issue and no real care taken when applying.

21mm tesa is hard to find though. I bought it from CRC last time.

Gorilla or Tesa. 19mm tape is OK for 19-21mm rims, but any wider on the rim then go wider on the Tesa tape.

All my rims have been 23mm and 25mm and had no issues with the gorilla tape. I've never used the eBay tape so can't comment

It's a tubeless rim isn't it? More tape is hardly ever the solution with a tubeless rim. And replacing tape only usually helps when there's something wrong with the original tape (ie damaged, or badly cut valve).

But if you do need more tape then Tesa, you could tubeless the world with one roll.

6 sets of wheels using gorilla tape, only one set had to be redone after nearly 2 years, found it easier to apply and overall better than stans.

I've used gorilla on the last few I've done. It works well but can be a pain to get the residue off when / if you come to remove it. It can also take the paint off.

Clear gorilla is the trick, apparently. I'll never use black gorilla tape on a wheel again, it works great but it's as easy to remove as melatonin.

Yeah that's whats confused me, never had a problem with other tubeless rims before. It's like the bead won't seat properly in the rim without a tube in there.

Thanks for the recommendations for Tesa tape. Looks good, but as said 21mm wide does seem quite rare unless I want to get it shipped from Lithuania.

Gorilla tape on mine. Literally did one this evening. Originally had the gaffe style black tape, bought the fattest one and then cut it to fit the rim width I had using a Stanley blade whilst it was still on the roll. If you catch my drift?

The one I did tonight was using the clear gorilla tape widest available again fitted it neatly on one side then chased the over hang on the inside under the bead hook of the rim with a penknife. Went up first time with a brand new out the packet ardent and a track pump.

+1 for Gorilla, just redid my MTB and there was residue from the original tape but the next lot stuck fine.
