Help please - having got an 'all mountain' bike (Zesty 324), I'm seeking advice on the best rims for such a bike.
Need to be:
Strong (rider is a fairly big lad)
Light
Reliable etc
I'm not a total psycho, but like the odd jump/drop off
All suggestions welcomed, thanks
in my experience you cant have something strong, light and reliable. 2 out of 3 is what you should aim for.
You should pick the two most important features and go for that.
I have Mavic 819 which are strong and reliable but wouldnt class them as light.
bontrager wheels are doing me pretty well at the mo.
Got rhythm comps on my alpine which has seen a fair bit of abuse and rhythm elites on the rockt that haven't seen abuse.
all staying straight
719s on pro2 hubs have been good for me
Unless you are going mental a well build wheel with an appropriate tyre for the job will last most all mountain type riding pretty well. I give my Mavic X717 rims on my orange 5 a hammering but they stay straight becuase they are good hand built wheels with (if I'm riding rocky locations / DH type stuff) proper chunky tyres on them.
"(Zesty 324),"
Lapierre do a 240mm travel Zesty?!
Firstly, what tyres are you running, and whats the biggest (eg alps) and smallest (eg mud) tyres you would like to be able to run well on them?
Also do you want to run tubeless only, tubes only or are you running tubes but want to be able to run a 'proper' tubeless system in future
Something like a Mavic XM719 disc is light but strong (460g) but only 19mm wide, wheras a DT Swiss EX5.1D is 500g but a lot wider at 28mm (but still a 'tube only' rim)
Sounds like a job for Stan's Flow rims. They're not cheap but I think they're great. 470 grms, strong (I'm a bit chap as well) and wider than normal so they make your tyres feel bigger. Also suitable if you want to go tubeless but you do't have to.
Only downside is the price. Failing that, when i swap my next set over to Flow rims, I'll have some Mavic D321s going cheap!
I've had good experiences with Bontrager Rhythym wheels too. 1year+ on the remedy, including some uplift days, and no problems yet.
I've got some Syncros DS28s on Pro IIs on my Heckler and they're definitely burly enough for All Mountain use, and surprisingly light.
They come in black or white and aren't too expensive at £45 each for the rims.
I do need to big up Syncros/Jungle too for brilliant customer service. They're outstanding.
Worth considering and a bit of a change from your usual mavic stuff.
Thanks to you all for the help
I've gone for Mavic XM719s on Pro IIs. Good custom deals on CRC

You're thinking Strong, light and cheap!
I'd say Pro IIs on Stans Flow Rims with DT comps... if the builder is good they'll put up with anything.
