Air travel with helmet - Hand or Hold luggage?

Having recently returned from holiday, where I needed to take a helmet I have been wondering where the safest place to carry the helmet is?  I chose hand luggage, but this meant when trying to get the bag in the overhead lockers it was likely to be bashed, plus then you are at the mercy of other passengers and air hostesses ramming as much as possible in the over head lockers.

In the hold, I use a soft duffel bag, but this has the option of padding the helmet with clothes etc, but then you are at the mercy of package handlers.

Wearing a helmet on a flight isn’t my preferred option, before it is suggested !

Any thoughts?

Just how strong do you think these air hostesses are?

So long as you're not planning on dangling it from your rucksack in a jerryoftheday stylee it's all good

Always took mine as carry on, never had any issues.

Take mine as my small hand luggage bag and it goes under the seat, in my helmet bag.

Having seen what happens to hold luggage, there is no way a helmet is ever going there.

Best solution is to wear it and if questioned, say it prevents you from getting your tongue stuck to the window, make sure to point out that your carer is with you

I've got a case for mine so it goes in that and then in hold luggage. The case is a Boardman branded one that I picked up for 10 quid on Ebay. If I didn't have that I'd carry it with me.

I just carry mine on, or wear it if I'm feeling lazy.

Open face is in the hold, packed in the middle of the suitcase, full face is in it's own fancy bag as carry-on. It's actually too large for the small carry-on bag that Ryanscare and Sleasyjet allow but I haven't been pulled up over it. So far...

My full face helmets have always came with a bag like this so it's hand luggage all the way with boarding passes and passport in the side pocket.

Hold for me. I pack socks and things into it then bury deep in the middle of the bag with plenty of stuff all around it. When snowboarding I also put my back protector over the top.

I've always had it carry on, also a pair of shoes, gloves, riding kit, lights.

If anything happens to the hold bag I can at least ride a hire bike in kit that fits!

A mate got pulled up on an Easyjet flight attempting to taking it as a carry on. It wouldn't fit in the bag size checker. Had to pay the extra baggage tax that the budget airlines love to dish out on unsuspecting customers.

Coming back he manged to get it in his bike bag.

I just put my mine in my case.

Sleazyjwt got me with a helmet a couple of weeks ago. It wouldn't quite fit in the metal checker thing and they charged me 50 quid.. I think they have tightened up, it's easy money.

Always carry helmets (ski, bike or motorbike) in my hand luggage, generally strapped to the outside. If they whinge I'll happily wear them on the flight. Never had an issue, but those two incidents above are worrying.

I tried putting it on my head and was told I wasn't allowed to do that.

I carried my (road) helmet in a very classy carrier bag and but it on the floor under the seat in front. This was Ryanair. Seemed like the safest option for all the reasons already mentioned.
