I am after some wisdom...
I have a rockhopper 02 that i have enjoyed for the last 3 years and have upgraded so the frame is the only remaining original part, (and thats being replaced with a new 08 frame) Now i'm not a light chappy so i don't upgrade to loose weight, i upgrade to gain relability... but i am confused.. I have decided to make the leap to FS as my dad is after a bike and so i was going to give him mine and buy a FS. I have seen on Ebay that a decent 2-3 year old bike can be got for £400-450 for a full bike (thinking Epic, Marrin Attack trail/mount vision/Giant Trance) I understand they might not be all Xt or the like but obviously i don't mind as when whattever is on them wears out i will replace it with somthing more suitable and so i currently am waiting such a bike in a place where i can see it before bidding such money. But whilst i was waiting i have had the idea of buying just a frame and then using the components from my current steed to take across and if necessary obtaining a few lower spec parts for my bike to give to my dad.... this leads me to Ebay... Where people are asking £300-400 for a frame only from 2004/2005 when a complete bike goes for £50 more? Have i honestly missed something? I am pretty new to this side of biking normally i just buy what i need and ride but i am so confused... this isn't a rant its an honest question of is there something i am not missing? It seems it costs more to assemble your own bike than to get one ready made? Is it unreasonable of me to expect a bike such as those i have listed that sell for £450 fully built to have a frame that sells for £200-250? I would understand if the bike was a good frame and crap components but they are mainly Xt and the like.... Like i said i am very new... anyone got advice on if theres a reason for this seemingly bizzare occurance?
