Hi limit screw looked right. Low limit was spot on. B screw bang on and cable tension was OK.

So why was my shifting crappy?

Turns out the bolts holding  the mech hanger to the frame were loose. Never had that before. Feel like a fool now.

It's a bugger, I've found it's less stressful just to start right from the beginning with derailleurs, so you go through all the steps as if you were fitting a new one, less chances of overlooking the basics that way.

Spot on!

"gear tune"

Check;

no hub play

no excessive freehub play

cassette tight

wheel in straight/tight

mech hanger tight

mech hanger straight

mech tight

mech looks straight/no excessive play

jockey wheel play

Cables seated ok

Chain ok

Cassette ok

H limit

cable tension

L limit

B tension

Cable return ok

(and parts compatibility, you would be surprised!)
