Just got back from an excellent 2 weeks touring round Catalunya in our little camper van with the bikes. Before we went I downloaded a few off road routes onto my foretrex from Wikiloc. All went well re riding the routes and found some really good tracks that we would never have come across normally. Always took the precaution of taking a map and compass as well as the GPS, until last Thursday. I had not taken quite as much care in downloading a 10 mile leg stretcher from a campsite we found in the Garrotxa area which is a region of extinct volcanos near Girona, we arrived at the site mid siesta so couldn't find a map or tourist info office open. What could possibly go wrong?
Mrs PB and I set off around 4pm, weather was slightly more overcast and muggy than the glorious weather we had been riding in but nothing to be bothered about. Got well into the ride which was on brilliant trails up river beds and into the craters of the volcanos. Then the GPS started losing signal due to the dense tree canopy, the route just disappeared off a cliff edge and it started thundering and lightening. Then the heavens opened so the emergency goretex came out. We came to the conclusion we were lost and due to the unusual lay of the land and dense tree cover, couldn't find a route out. Eventually found a route down to a farm track and a lad sheltering out the storm, he pointed us in the right direction and despite doing double the mileage we got back at about 8.00 with it nearly dark. Just shows how quickly things can unravel in unfamiliar territory.Won't be going out without a good map in a hurry.

I went for a ride on Dartmoor the day after New Year a few years ago; I managed to leave my map on a rock somewhere above the Avon dam. The light went, and I still wasn't back; then my lights started dimming, and I started getting somewhat concerned. I eventually found my way back, my car on it's own in a huge empty car park. That was a welcome sight! I try to be more careful where I put things down while riding now... ๐Ÿ™‚

What so you nearly never got back before it was dark? The horror!

Did you not have a map on the GPS thingy anyway.
