Hello all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with my 9mm thru-axle dropouts on my Cotic Escapade forks and wonder if anyone can help. It's a general 9mm question too I suspect.

I was running standard quick release wheels in the dropouts and was a bit sick of prising apart the forks to remove the wheel, and that there seemed to be movement in the wheel when braking. I invested in the 9mm hub adapters for my novatec 771 hubs and bought a superstar 9mm skewer. They fit well and I thought it was sorted.

However, I've just done a shed braking test and no matter how tight I do up the qr the wheel moves. If you look from above over the bars the wheel moves to the left about 4mm ( and stays there) when braking forward and back to the right if you brake backwards. I have to brake hard, but no harder than when on the bike. It puts the disc alignment out.

If I leave the qr loose the axle rattles around in the dropout - I thought this should be a snug fit to prevent this as bolt thru is meant to be rock solid. Is this a design flaw in a) the axle, b) the forks, or c) my brain?

Thanks for any advice,
Sam

You don't say what QRs you are using. Almost all exteral cam ones are crap. Get some steel Shimano or Campag ones.

I suspect that the axle isn't centred in the wheel. That is centred there are different lengths of axle either side of the hub or is too long.

So when you tighten the quick release it's tightening against the end of the axle and not the dropout

I have had this and sorted it with a cup and cone spanners and moving the axle through. But that was in the olden days

Does the QR lever feel properly tight when you do it up? I am using a DT RWS axle and the nut theads quite a bit in, it could be that ampthill is right and you are getting to the end of the threaded part on your axle.
You could try adding a 1mm washer under the nut, the fact that it is not serrated shouldn't make a difference given the closed dropout design.

Was a novatec qr, now a superstars 9mm thru qr:

http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/9mm-front-qr-through-axle.htm

It feels very tight but I will check again - lots of thread left and engaging properly on the fork.

Can't adjust the hub as its push in adapters and cartridge bearings - wheel is true and centred though.

Thanks for feedback.

Could it be I just need to tighten it even more? Will have to get the hammer out to close the qr! (Joke).

I have discovered the problem!

I bought a pair of 9mm adapters, and just chucked them on the hub without really checking them, but it turns out one of them is a 12mm adapter - a picking error - causing lots of play. I have got onto the supplier (in Tiawan) to try to get the correct bit.

Cheers.
