[#6026982]

by which i of course mean 9mm shorter than toatl stack of headtube/set and stem.
do you still have your front teeth etc etc?
not looking for a load of bluster about how dangerous it is, and am aware of relevance of stem clamp bolt position, lower stack headsets, stems etc.
just considering it as a considered risk, so looking for actual incedences of it being fine for years, or totally not!
thanks

I ran a slightly-shorter-than-it-should-be-steerer on my long-headtubed frame, after buying a second-hand fork with a shortish steerer.

I don't think it was quite as low as 9mm short though. I rode it happily, because the top of the steerer tube was above the centre-line of the upper pinchbolt.

Otherwise, I don't think it's really a risk worth taking.

I've snapped a steerer (not due to being too short though), and can confirm it's not a plesent experience.

Is that a sticker on top of the stem?

weeksey, looking at your pic, I'd say that was 5mm, which should be fine to clear the top cap.
9mm is probably a little too much though. That's about a quarter of the stem height. I'd personally look to remove a spacer (if you have any) or get a lower stack headset top cup or lower stack stem.

I was about to say it will depend on the height of the stem but you imply you know that (yet haven't stated it).

hmm, thanks folks. that looks like a bit less than 9mm weeksy?
and above the top bolt too?

not sure i'll get above the top bolt, and don't have all the stuff in one place so can't check. guess i'll just have to get it all together and have a look

I have done, on an mtb but not one that was used off road, not sure I'd do it again

I ran mine at 6-7mm for ages with no problems

If the top bolt is still clamping around the steerer and not above it then I'm happy.

Lower stack stem, or headset an option?

i know all the sizes, but some are only on paper (or measured by my dad...)
and not wanting to change stem or headset, and obviously don't have spacers to remove, otherwise i wouldn't be considering it!

so what type of failure would you expect or have you seen? stem popping off steerer? or more likely deforming/damaging it?
cracked steerer thread i read this morning looked nasty

No. It's a Ragley stem. We did them with a print across the top of the stem and the top cap.
