[Closed] 96mm BCD cranks creeping in

A few companies are making their new cranks 96mm bcd as far as I can tell... why is this? Will the likes of superstar start making 96mm narrow wide rings at the same price?

Fed up of bike brands and their incessant changes to things that work as well as the newest incarnations.

Means you can make a 30t narrow wide ring without having to machine threads into the ring..

Don't buy them then.

If people don't buy 96mm BCD cranks the manufacturers will relise that people don't want it and they will stop making them.

But in reality I suspect that you are one of the very few people who care what the BCD of their cranks are. And of the small minority of people who do care a lot of them will see 96mm as a positive step as it will allow them to run a smaller chainring.

Doesn't work, as seen too often before- OEMs are the biggest customers, individual's decision on individual parts is basically irrelevant.

It's the new Shimano 1x11 groupsets where they're trying to bring 96mm in, Yes to allow for a 30T ring, but also to impose another proprietory "Standard" but can you really blame them?

There was a time when 104 BCD four bolt cranks and rings were a new standard.

If you don't want it, don't buy it, nobody's holding a gun ot your noggin...

Doesn't the new xt have a funky bolt pattern, too?

Don't buy a bike with a 96mm BCD crank then.

The reality is that the switch to 96mm is a response to customer demand for 30T chainrings. 1% of people who are fidlers may be a bit miffed for a bit before people like superstar start making 96mm aftermarket rings and an even smaller number of people will be miffed when superstar eventually stop making 104mm rings. But overall it will make f all difference to most people.

Becuase like you say OEM is the biggest influencer. And if OEMs are the biggest market then Shimano can hardly be accused to switching to 96 to exract more money out of the tiny component market. They are doing it because the OEMs want 30T chain rings. And they want 30T chain rings because "you" want 30T chain rings

Gotta be so much better than 94mm, that was shit, and 104mm is now shit too.

Someone (was it OneUp) released a chainring that fits both 94mm and 96mm using wee venn-diagrammy holes. Well done to them

Could 5 bolt 86bcd chainrings be made in abundance as I need some ?

I thought the manufacturers brought in the smaller BCD so they could use smaller rings on triples for 29ers? Something about making the gearing equivalent to 26" wheels and now they have started to spread to 650B's for similar reasons?
