[#562489]

My Inbred's rusted through at the bottom of the stubby seat tube/seat stay junction tube thingy.

I noticed some bubbly paint and then put my finger through it ๐Ÿ™

hole's about the size of my little finger and I've not tried to poke at it with a screwdriver yet.

It's one of the original 853 SS ones.

Repairable or should it just be gracefully retired?

Repairable. Then spray some framesaver inside the tubes when done (especially the BB area....)

I'm not an engineer, but I wouldn't want to ride it again, I could have other areas of internal weakness, on the up side time fir a new frame

doesn't happen on carbon ? just catastrophic failure in an instant .or scratches over time same result..tupperware for bikes ? what will they think of next?

what will they think of next?

Maybe building bicycles out of a material that doesn't rust?

how exactly does a scratch weaken carbon?

by that argument a scratch ruins a heat treated aluminium or steel frame? (this presumes my limited knowlage of metalugery is accurate)

MrSmith - that explains it - the magical aura doesn't extend to that alloy.

podge - ygm. forgot to say - I've got some surly 1x1 forks that go with the frame if you are interested.

new frame already sourced and parts transferred, btw. A nice Kona out the classifieds ๐Ÿ™‚

how exactly does a scratch weaken carbon?

there is talk that a scratch can cut through a fibre and weaken the structure as there is only 99 fibres holding the two sides together instead of 100 (not real numbers) and a slight decrease in thickness. however most fiver frames have a lacquer then a vanity layer then the main structure so it would have to be a deep scratch and then its debatable weather a scratch (V's a gouge) would make any difference

a scratch can also affect the strength of a metal (alu, steel, ti) as again the material has decreased in thickness.

depending on who's argument you believe, a scratch in carbon will make the bike instantly explode taking out everything in a 10 mile radius.
