[Closed] 7 Stanes - will I stain my shorts...?

...or die...?

I've been persuaded to head up there with a bunch o' guys and I'm a bit scared, to be honest.

I'm no downhillophobe and love going fast but have always imagined the 7 Stanes to be the domain of 8-inch-travelator DH bikes... right...?

I'm going on a steel hardtail which has served me well over some mental stuff so the question is: will I cr@p myself and stain my lycra??

Everyone knows you can't ride trail centers on a hardtail ;-0 you will die a horrible death I think.

You'll be fine.

Your speed will depend on which trails you hit to be honest, if you are going on the DH tracks than expect to crash. Other than those tracks you'll be fine. My buddy does all the trials on a HT, and he races DH on a HT he has no problems, his back is usually busted but he is fine.

Thanks guys! (Well, no thanks to you, Ayatollah, you meany)

Will I need pads? I've worn 'armour' (that's what the cool kids call it, like, yeah?) in the past but that was actual downhill; 7 Stanes is more trails and uphills, right...?

You are aware that there are climbs at some of the 7 Stanes trails yeah? And there are flat bits, and some bits go up gently, and some bits go down gently, and are, how you would say, more like cross country than DH?

I think you havent yet "got" the 7 Stanes yet. They have different vibes and there is a real mix, so you may want to go to places like Kirroughtree and Dalbeattie rather than the pure DH sections of say Ae and Innerleithen.

Oh my goodness. Yeah, you'll snap your bike in half, fudge your duds and all your mates will laugh at you...

As all trail centres, there's optional mentalness but nothing that will cause you to be 'riding the bum clutch' on a hardtail.

Go enjoy!

'armour'

It IS armour- legally CE-rated protective gear can be called body armour. It just sounds a bit silly ๐Ÿ˜‰

Innerleithen's got proper DH, but it also has a red/black XC route. Every one of the Stanes I've ridden at, I did on a hardtail- Scandal or Soul. There's some brilliant riding but so far I've never once wished I was on a full suss, except for in the car park at innerleithen where I had a) the only hardtail out of about 60 riders and b) the least travel out of about 60 riders. But that soon wore off.

I'm with Trekster West is the best and if you want the best trail then Kirroughtree Black is the best in my opinion followed by Mabie then Dalbeattie.

Done them all on a Steel HT Singlespeed only last week ๐Ÿ˜‰ Even my dog cleaned Mabie and Dalbeattie, he even went up and down the slab ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's all good you'll have a great time, full suss or HT rideable on either.

Kirroughtree is brilliant make sure that is in your itenary.

Its all tame and doable on a hardtail.

I did Innerleithern many times on my Inbred with 130mm forks. In fact I enjoyed it more on that then my 6"er...and that's probably the maddest route out of the 7 stanes.

We've taken complete beginners round Glentress too and they loved it.

Nothing fell off it this year! Maybe coz I only used it for 2 rides before jumping on the SS for the rest of the week.

Heres a few pics from our trip there last week, clicky for more
