DW link so not interested, that’s for trail bikes

If memory serves a little known DH racer called Sam Hill had some alright results on a DW-Link bike like the one below...

Well... I’ll be!

I guess that Team Rumours pic was of a robot, not an Atherton made of Cubes!

Atherton Bikes?! Didn't see that coming.
Best of luck to 'em. Glad to see Robot Bike guys are still in the MTB industry.
An all British brand.

Will it just be Robot Bikes with some different bike offerings? Or will be see a completely different lineup, designs & pricing?

Back in the day, when there were a lot of shite designs about.

Why pay the kinds of money they will ask for (hell, why even pay V10C money) when the most competitive bike on the circuit is a fairly cheap aluminium bike - one who's very stable riding characteristics also just happen to suit amateurs.

From what I've gathered a lot of the new 29 dh bikes coming through have crazy forward axle paths in the latter stages of their travel, save for the Commencal, Norco and the prototype GT. Looking forward to see if they can manage to keep it vertical on this bike.

I clicked on that link but I'm no wiser. Have they launched a Bike Park or a Trail Centre?

Drac - can you read it OK on your iPad?

fair play, best of luck to them.

Next time give them all a mic each and sort out the audio!

Echo above, audio is pretty poor.
Can't really hear what Dan is saying.

Interesting news though, look forward to seeing how it works for them.

Well went to read it on pink bike, not really in the mood to listen to a you tube vid for a short announcement.....
Good luck to them though, as I'm sure Rachel will prove the bike can go fast....

Must admit I loved the comment from the Canadian on pinkbike "Gwin: *becomes a team manager* - Athertons: Hold my beer"

😀

I'm interested to see what Dave Weagle comes up with!

I just think even the Athertons are going to have to come up with something very very good with some kind of added value to get people to pay robot bikes prices - and Gee and Rachael are going to have to go on a winning streak on it. The sales will live and die by how well both of them perform this season. I don't think it will be enough for Rachael alone to dominate the womens.

Are they trying to make a small fortune from bike construction?
Hope they have a large fortune to start with.

Good luck to them, but that's a few mouths to feed if it's to be more than a vanity project/sideshow, and a lot of travel and expenses to cover.
I'd love to see the business plan, surely the robot stuff will be only for flaghip(s), volume sales have to come from somewhere else.

Well with the people involved it's either going to be a really expensive vanity project or a lot more than how many bikes can we see cause of the name. Make something good and people will buy it, some to be different, some because of marketing, some because they tried it and loved it.

The Sam Hill effect with Iron Horse in Aus was amazing though, every kid had one, just missed out as by the time I was looking they were all on 3x welded.

I'm sure there are enough people out there that will buy a Atherton bike because of the name on it. There's enough folk with money that ride V10's that don't race (that used to include me) so I suspect they'll get reasonable sales.

I imagine they are not going to be aiming for high volume sales based on the construction and comments about customisation etc.

The Santa Cruz's have pedigree though, and if you're round Sheffield and know the right people you can get their stuff for well below RRP.

As I said, the company will live or die on whether they dominate this season. If not the fashion conscious will just carry on buying Santa Cruzs and the privateers on a budget who want a competitive bike will buy Commencal.

Bloody Nora, that website is absolutely impossible to read. I’ve seen a lot over the years, but that’s a humdinger. Chapeau.

The site looks better on a Computer, the mobile version looked worse.

Good luck to them I say, its a bold move in the current climate. I just hope they build bikes us mere mortals can afford and not just focus on high end.

Well I think that this is pretty spectacular news.

A British bike and probably the most successful family of riders who also happen to be British, joining together.

I would buy one just for the uniqueness of that. I live and ride in Britain, I admire what they have done. So I dont care about the price, where do I send my cheque ?

Couple of small questions;
1 - will I be able to ride the Hard Line on it
2 - will it make me as hard as Gee and a winner like Rachel

Not interested in that sort of bike, but good luck to them.

If they get it right it will be a good thing for the British bike industry.

I have seen it, hardly the look of a polished WC product. But then that’s hardly a surprise! Not my cup of tea at all.

DW link so not interested, that’s for trail bikes. Commencal will wipe the floor with them again with their design, with a bike that costs a third of what they will sell this for.

Lol! - because of course an armchair 'expert' from a bike forum knows more about these things than multiple world champions.

Can't see merchandise selling if they only do superbike prices/models. And hard to see how the bikes will sell regardless of results if they don't do a cheaper alu version or have a complimentary trail bike (yt nailed it with jeffsy) which people can aspire to.

Anyway, genuinely interesting to see how they do. Really keen to see if gee can make it back to the top 5 regularly. Think Rachel can ride an Apollo and get top 5 most rounds.

Atherton bikes have just posted this Image, trying to see if the linkage is the same which I don’t think it’s the same bike

I think if you look closely the second photo the top tube / seat tube lug is integrated where as the first photo has a gusset/brace. The linkage in the first photo appears to have the pivot forward if the seat tube and the second linkage doesn’t look like it is as far forward of the seat tube in length or pivot point.

Of course the original Glory was a knock-off of the Iron Horse Sunday, which was also designed by.....?

Personally I love the way the DW link behaves on the turner's I've had. If they can bring some of that, with a British made brand to get behind, at a sensible price (robot pricing was a bit too steep imo) then I'm all ears. Certainly excited to see what they bring to the market.

I don’t get why folk (inc Hora, of all people) on pinkbike are all saying ‘it’s just an R160’? As if a 27.5” 160mm enduro bike is the same as a 29er DH race bike...

Because people on the internet with a spreadsheet can tell you how any bike rides, the good ones can even do it from a photograph. We should respect our betters in that respect.

No ones stating how it will ride.

They're questioning the value of a product that doesn't add anything new other than being a DW link carbon bike that will be very, very expensive based on the previous robot frames - who's geometry can be customized. Very few people customize the geometry of their bikes, most will purchase off the shelf geometry. The hook seems to be "oooh 3d printed" - but to me, it just produces a bike that looks like a bamboo bike.

I don't see the point in it's existence and I don't see where it fits in the market. But maybe the Athertons will prove me wrong.

Anyone turning up to a group ride with that name on the downtube is going to need to be bloody fast, or they'll look like a right tool. 😀
