I want something that is fairly lightweight but is suitable for mud-gravel-tarmac. I accept the former may be a bit of a compromise on the grounds that the latter two are the most important.

Any suggestions?

Wtb riddler is good but 37, the crossboss is fairly low profile and 35.

conti cross-speeds work well, though some folk seem to get a lot of punctures, some not

I use Continental Cycloxkings which are cheap but wear out really quick, a few punctures, but nothing crazy. grip well in the soft stuff and I seem to give up before they do, they are 35c.

I commute every day on them so maybe I am being a bit harsh.

I have had them on since October and the rear is a little thin, but I have not had to remove them for weekend runs in the woods.

Just bought a pair Conti Cyclo X Kings, not tried them yet, still waiting for tubes. Billed as an all rounder, look good on paper with closely spaced center treads for speed but pronounced sideknobs for cornering.

I've also run a set of Conti CX speeds with success, mainly tarmac/towpath/gravel use with occasional muddy bits (where they are a bit exciting, but not dangerously so...). Just about to try out some Clement LAS which look similar-ish and seem very well reviewed, going to give tubeless a try (the Contis seem renowned for not working tubeless...)

Go classic & give Challenge Grifo's a try, quick & grippy unless it's really sloppy.
Conti's make some of the worst CX tyres i've ever had the misfortune to ride on-terrifiying how little grip they have on anything other than clean dry tarmac!

Be careful with those 35c cross bosses, mine came up large on stans grails

Cross boss working fine on Pacentis. Too bloody tight. I can't break the seal to get them off!

These are for my new Plug, which came with Maxxis Roamer 42s, which seem very heavy. The Alex rims can take down to 32mm but I guess it's a trade-off with puncture prevention.

I was using Kenda Small Block 8s on my Arkose, which seemed OK. Those Challenges are pricey.

Mud and tarmac - thats moon on a stick territory....

The Clement PDX is rated as a rather good mud tyre and has a central knobble line that should roll well on tarmac. Depends what end of your moon on a stick spectrum you want to bias.

I have WTB Cross Boss 35s, on my i23 rims they measure 38mm at their widest point, PDX is on the wish list.

Clement PDX are surprisingly capable in both mud and on road.

This guy is a big fan of the PDX

Munqe Chick and I have been racing the PDX clincher all CX season (in UCI legal width) and it is a great mix of muddy side grip and straight line rolling speed. She's leading the series ahead of riders on fancy tubs so they aren't limiting her performance.
