Hi All,

Building up a SP dynamo hub for use on my 29er and cross bike and struggling to decide on a rim. Want something stiffer than the Stans 355 currently using as hub is narrower and 355 is a bit bendy on the 29er anyway. Dont want anything too wide as the cross bike get 30c tyres, maybe even 28c slick.

Thinking maybe an older stans Arch might do the job if i can find one, not sure the ArchEX would suit the dual duty? On-one have Pacenti rims cheap but they dont seem tough enough for cross tyres in rough ground.

Any other suggestions?

Ta,
Rich.

Running crest on my CX front wheel since Jan, holding up OK but they are too wide, pretty much no shoulder tread with 35c tyres. Think a 19mm ish rim is more what I'm after, probably going to try a 340 on a spare hub I have, probably no good for you if you plan on using it on an MTB. Shimano 29er wheels may be worth a look.

Hmm, thanks. As its just the dynamo wheel i might be able to restrict to wider cross tyres and slicks. Be ideal if it could do both tho.

What widths are both those?

Weight not too much of an issue, just would like it to work with both 30mm and 2.2" tyres. Probably too much of a variation.

Iron cross ?
There seems to be mixed advice out there and this one here could be an overly cautious official line but 45psi isn't much good for slicks.

The Mavic 29er rims might suit you. They're a little narrower than Stans, but would fit nicely to a wide-ish cross tyre, and they are good and stiff, although this means a few more grams

My SP hub is going into a Magic 719 rim. It'll be used with 28 mm tyres for touring on the road and as wide a tyre as I can get in my forks for mountain biking/bikepacking
