Hey guys, planning to go to the alps this year with a few mates. Planning on doing more singletrack and back country rides than DH. Been looking at a hardtail for the job as can't afford anything more. Been looking at a Ragley piglet with 130mm forks, or a 120mm 29er from specialized stumpjumper evo (comes with 100mm fox but you can up the travel to 120mm).

Any ideas on how the 29er would go? Anyone done it before? or am I just being stupid....

Would have thought any of these would be more suited than Stumpy:
Kona Honzo
Canfield Yelli Screamy
Transition AM 2-9
Banshee Paradox

All designed around 120mm fork

Oh - and I'm not sure about the few true 29er 2.5 gravity tyres out there, but I've just got some Schwalbe Hans Dampf in Trailster compound and they are grippy as a grippy thing!!

I've not ridden the Alps but I would imagine geometry and the fact that your on a hardtail matters more than the wheel diameter.

Thanks for the info clink, have been looking at the Transition AM2-9 just awaiting a reply from surf sales with a price. Also been checking out the Stanton Slackline.

I went out to do mega avalance last year and wouldnt recommend a hardtail, its very aggresive terrain so a full sus would be better. Everyone last year was riding 160mm travel bikes so i would suggest 2nd hand might be a better option. I didnt see a single 29er whilst i was out there, which im guessing due to there steep geometry would make it less fun and youd be over the front end alot more so would make descending more sketchy
