since I've had a full sus to go along side my hardtail, I've found a new love for the hardtail in its pedalling efficiency
currently it is a DMR trailstar (large) running a pike DP 130/160 which I've just converted to 140 coil
The trailstar is a little slack in the seat, and I've never felt great with the bar position, too low? too close?
So I have just bit the bullet and pre ordered a Banshee Paradox V3, much steeper seat, bit more reach and stack, the BB drop is 60mm vs 40mm on the trailstar... I don't think I will be smashing pedals too much? I am aware that I will need spacers for the rear wheel, and I'm not 100% convinced they are the best solutions normally the top hats on the wheel would locate securely in the drop outs, now there'd be a 3mm spacer and more load on the axle? or are the spacer kits more than good enough?
Both BB's are 73mm so I'm guessing I can use my none boost crankset happily enough
I know I wont be able to get away with a bigger tyre on the back, as the chain runs super close to 2.5's on the trailstar
Short question:
will my BB be too low to the ground and be arse to ride?
will boost spacers be fine and I wont die (wheelset is spank 350 and not very old)
am I missing anything else running the wrong wheels?
I've been using boost spacers for ages on different bikes with zero issues I just roughen up the end of the axle and use a dab of super glue to keep the spacer on. I also bought a few spares just incase I lose one on the ride.
I’m not sure you can adapt that hub to Boost standard. I’ve not needed to do it myself but I’m not sure it’s as simple as just extending spacers either end, as you need the right spacing for the disc too.
You’d probably be better to get a s/h boost wheel.
Edit - ^^ fair enough!
yer you get 3mm for each end of the top hats, and 3mm for behind the disc (with bolts)
Spacers work fine.
I found I needed to get new cranks and an offset chainring on my boost dartmoor primal as the chainring fouled the stay in normal position. Movimg the chainring to the other tabs made for a horrible chainline. This is frame dependant though.
Boost is absolutly sodding pointless on a HT.
My primal can do 27 or 27+ tyres and the BB is a bit low on normal 27 tyres. Very stable and rips berms. I do get more pedal strikes tham my fs though but you get used to it. It's also much harder to manual as a result of the low BB.
Only niggle I’ve had is not enough adjustment on the rear mech to get the full range. YMMV
I have seen spacer kits that you have to dish the wheel that would keep the cassette in the right place.
ah i didnt even consider that the mech might be shifted out further.. good point
So, since the frame was on pre order, i have requested a cancellation, money is better in my pocket than having something that might be marginally better than my trailstar or might not work at all.
Plus, i had a good ride around, quick for me, up the local last night and was so impressed with it both up and down
