27.2mm dropper post recommendations

My Cannondale HT doesn't have a dropper post as standard, so I'm looking to get one, with 125mm drop.

Now, there doesn't seem to be a lot of choices with 27.5mm diameter and 125mm drop, and the ones that I can find are rather pricey.

Can anyone recommend one?

I have a PNW Rainer post in those dimensions on my gravel bike. It's pretty good, would recommend.

I've got this Tranz X job.  It's been absolutely fine.  Pretty sure it was identical to the Rainier when I checked.

I'd probably pony up for a one-up if I didn't need external routing.  They've been great on other bikes, and good bit lighter and neater.

I could be wrong, often am, but I think the PNW Rainier, TranzX & the BrandX are all the same posts, just with different logos on.

My BrandX has been fine, even though I’m massively over the recommended weight limit.

Brand X Ascend if you can find one - got mine from SportsDirect last year, does the job and great value for it too

  • With typical STW telepathy I was having exactly this thought while out on my gravel bike this morning. Research revealed you can still get BrandX droppers now on the Ascend website. They do have a 27.2 110mm drop with external routing for £120 without lever. My gravel bike hasn’t a port in the seat tube to run a cable through so I was wondering had anyone drilled a gravel bike seatpost as was done in the early days of mtb droppers? This would definitely give a wider choice of manufacturers and would be neater than external.

I've drilled 3 frames now to provide internal routing for my kids' bikes.

Thread here:

https://singletrackworld.com/forum/bike-forum/so-im-thinking-of-drilling-a-hole-in-my-frame/

It has all worked reasonably well. Just bear in mind getting around the BB if you're going full internal from the down tube. It can be tricky, so on darling daughter's current bike, I ran externally down the down tube, ziptied to the rear brake hose, then into a hole in the seat tube roughly where the front mech mount would be.

OneUp V3 is available in that size.

I have one. It is good except for the collar which keeps loosening for some reason - I need to email them about that.

I bought a KS 27.2 dropper last year as I couldn't find much else that was a remotely sensible price. Fairly heavy ... but then so am I so i'm hoping it means it's strong.

Running a brand X ascend on one of our bikes.  If you can find it with a different sticker on it's a good bet.

External routing, the lever ergonomics are ok too.

Is the frame anything special? A bit extreme but you can buy a 2nd hand frame and a 30.9/31.6 dropper for not much money. If you have an old frame you will get better geometry too. Might be a good opportunity to upgrade.

I bought one of those ribble lever under the seat 27.2 droppers (110mm) which was great as had no cable to worry about and suited my gravel bike at the time. Still have it in the spares somewhere but they’re cheap and cheerful

Yeah I agree with that tbh, even the best 27.2 dropper is still short. I made this exact mistake with my old Scandal, it'd have made much more sense to replace the frame and then get one of the million good options of droppers for a proper sized seattube.
