...and there's a 17" frame size now. Apart from the shock (EDIT: ah I guess the 'Evolution' shock is still the RP23?) , seems everything else is as 2011.

A quick Google brings up a 'press release' of some sorts:

"MBRs trail bike of the year for 2011 has had some slight revisions as well as two new sizes added for 2012.

In response to the popularity of dropper seat posts Orange have been working on lowering the top tube of the Five. The new frame has a top tube based on an 18" bike with the seat tube dropped one inch to allow riders room to fit a height adjustable seatpost and run it comfortably at the five inch full extension. The 17" tag is used primarily for ordering convenience, and the 16 and 18" sizes remain as they were in 2011.

Sizing comprehensively covered at the small extreme, we'll now be offering a 22" frame for the tallest of riders. Using custom built tubing to combat additional stresses, the Five geometry has been adapted to bring the same ride characteristics despite the additional height. To promote strength and stiffness, the frame will only be offered with the Maxle rear end.

Standard colors for the 2012 Five.
• Gloss Black
• Mandarin Orange
• Electric Blue
• Passion Red

Custom colors available from Unique Sports Company.

Frames available from July 2011."

very interesting....as a 5'9'' rider who feels in between 16 and 18. However, geometry in link is confusing me - how can effective TT be identical for 17'' and 18'' if actual top tube lengths are different but seat and HT angles are the same? Anyone actually ridden a 17 inch 5??

OK - looks like its an 18 with a lower top (and seat) tube. Doesn't really help me then....

Effective tt length is measured horizontally and is independent of seat tube length.Actual tt tube length is measured along the tt and is at its shortest (in relation to effective length) when at 90degrees to the seat tube, getting longer when above/below this point.Draw a stick diagram.
The 17 is actually just the strange 5 they built 50 or so of about 18 months ago (which is really a 16").It rides identically to an 18" with a bit extra gooch clearance.

But the seat tube is (presumably) 2" shorter on the 16" than the 18"; the "press release" says 1" drop from a standard 18"?
