[#10376826]

Looking at one of these as a front tyre for a winter hardtail build, paired up with a 2.8 nobby nic trailstar rear which I already have. Mainly for sloppy off piste riding and a bit of trail centre.
Does the minion have the bite required or better with the Mary?
Does the Mary have horrendous drag and better suited for e bikes?
Not used either so advice welcome.
I have a set of 29er wheels i will use in it for big rides.

I have ridden neither, but I'd suggest also putting the High Roller 2 3C in the mix.
Seems to be a good all-rounder and I'm very impressed with grip in the wet so far (two rides, some slop).

I'm running a 2.5 Minion DHF on the front but I'm considering a 2.5 Shorty at the moment.

Make of that what you will...

Have the Magic Mary 2.6 addix soft.

Fantastic!
Monster grip.
If used as well as rear tyre: yes there is drag. But only on roads - in soft and difficult trails they roll just great.

As front tyre: maybe try the super soft.

I’m running a MM 2.8 on my SolarisMax and it’s a better tyre than a DHF in the slop. For me, in our conditions, based on a 2.3 DHF not a 2.8. Most of us (FOD riders) have switched from DHF to MM over the last few years. As a front.

I’m running a 2.6 ForeKaster on the rear. That’s between ace and a bit too exciting.

Its going on a Solaris max actually, i see couple of u guys running them.
I have a 2.5 DHF on front of the 29er full sus and just changed it too a 2.35 mary as I find them better in the slop too. But no experience of the 2.8s hence the ask.
Going by experience on the smaller size and comments above the mary sound like the one!
How you liking the solaris max's?
Can't wait to get it sorted.

2.5 Shorty rather than the 2.5 DHF for winter off-piste. Or the 2.6 Hillbilly - I'm only one ride in with that but it's good!

Yep ive heard the hillbilly is good, the 29er is gunna get one on it soon which will also run in the solaris, just looking for a 27.5 x 2.8 front though for the other wheelset I have for it, I'll run both wheel sizes and see which I prefer, the 29er option leaves me with no wheels in the full suss though.

Minions are nice and grippy on pretty much all terrain I've found if you run them low enough, there also fast rolling on the tracks/roads with a bit more air in too, so just a good all-rounder.
However, if you're going to be riding balls out in the slippery stuff and want a bit more confidence cornering and more DH grip I'd probably stick a shorty on the front and bob a minion on the back.

SolarisMax is awesome so far.

FWIW I went with HR2s because I only want one set of B-plus tyres for all year round, and I reckon they might be the best bet for that.

I don’t think you can get a Shorty in 2.8 yet. The minion DHR 2 is actually more geared the mud than a DHF I think.

Do these big tyres actually grip in the slop? I've always run narrower tyres in the winter that cut through to the hard ground under the mud.
