2.3mm Disc Rotors

Got some new brakes on their way and the recommended rotor width is 1.7-2.3mm.  As I'm running Hope floating at 1.8mm, it seems like all the excuse I need to treat myself to some new rotors as well. 220 and 200, 6 bolt. I'm not adverse to one piece but I do like the aesthetic of the floating rotor

What's good out there? Tried the search function, but not seeing much.

Trickstuff can be ordered in the UK, without all the faff of import duty, though your LBS/Saddleback. That’s what I’ve done this time.

I have the TRP R1 ran with Hope E4 calipers. I wouldn’t want to be bothered with trying to get them to play nicely with any caliper using moon/cup washers etc.

TRP 2.3 rotors on 2 bikes, they've been unexcitingly excellent so far. 203 f&r on one bike and 180 f&r on another.

They were cheapish from Merlin about a year ago. Not sure if they've still got stock.

Seem to warp a hell of a lot less than 1.8 rotors, there's not been a hint of rubbing since fitting. Which is nice 🙂

Yeah, reduced rubbing is one of the things I'm hoping for. Keeping on top of a 220x1.8 sees pretty regular fettling to keep silent running.

I'm sold on thicker rotors, I've got TRP 2.3mm on one bike and Magura 2mm MDR-P on the other

If you are running Hope V4's you can run the Hope V4 vented rotor, 3.3mm thick, availible in 203mm and 220mm

2.3mm is the widest that will fit in the new brakes.

Wish Hope would put 2.3mm braking surfaces on their floating rotors, that would be an easy answer.

Also using the TRP ones, they are fine. I’m a habitual rear brake dragger and they handle the heat better than the SRAM centrelines

At least witht he Hope non floaty ones you can bend it to shape if warping happens.

The Hope 2.3 are good. Have lasted far longer than the Hope floating ones I previously had on the ebike!

Merlin were doing the R1 for about £9 12m ago. Sadly no more.

Did get some cheapo 2.3mm rotors from AliExpress for about a tenner the pair for the KSL, and seem ok.  These will be the next ones for about £25 a pair. Not dissimilar to the new TRP rotors.

I have TRP, they seem like good parts tbf it's made absolutely no difference for me so far. I think in my case it's an "ain't broke can't fix it" thing, my brakes worked well before.

Ebike Maggy one piece rotors plus TRP standard ones does it for me.

MDR-P working well at 220 front and 180 rear.... 2mm and not too spendy.

I started with Magura MDR-P 220mm front and rear, bike developed a rattle and after changing the mech, suspension bearings and going mad, realised it was the rear disc... swapped to a 220mm SRAM and have had no issues. Yes I am running Magura front and SRAM rear rotors...

The newer SRAM rotor isnt as noisy as ones I've had before.

The Magura ones look good but I've heard a few stories about them rattling.

They don't have to be MDR-P, no. The two piece rotor is an aesthetic I like though.

Having said that, I'd rather have the the functionality of an expandable brake track rather than full fixed rivets. At that point, it might as well be one piece.

FWIW I've not had any rattling issues with my front 220mm MDR-P, it's been great. I like the added benefit of thicker rotors reducing dead stroke.

What am I missing? Surely floating rotors solve the problem of warped brake tracks in a different way to just using thicker rotors.

More mass means better heat management. I'm currently running Hope floating rotors, which judging by the slight discolouration, are ideally sized. However, I do have issues with rotors staying true.

The new brakes I'm waiting on specify a rotor of 1.7 to 2.3mm. The 1.8mm Hope rotors are at the bottom end of that range so I'm looking for something a bit thicker that might resist bending a bit better.

Galfer Wave are 2mm but are pretty reasonably priced. Running 223mm on my ebike and I rate them.

Echo comments already made about the TRP 2.3mm rotors. They just work and they're not overly expensive.

I bought Formula Cura 4 brakes a while back and they came with 2.3 rotors

defo do the job,I went down from a 220 to a 203 up front

Tektro tr-17 is also an option, 2.3mm thick. RRP of £15-£25, so worth a try and see if it works for you.

I wouldn't go back to less than 2.3mm rotors, work better in every way other than weight.

Which brakes?

I have a set of the Merlin £50 Tektro 4 pots on one bike (with 2.3mm rotors) and they came with 5mm pads, but I'm now running normal 4mm pads with no issues. Same pads that fit TRP Slates and Shimano Saint, etc.

I'd only be concerned about over extending the pistons if I was running 1.8mm rotors on them.

I have a bunch of various thicker rotors, on different bikes, but all with the same brakes & pads including TRP, SRAM, Trickstuff, Intend & Brake Stuff.

The consistent best are the SRAM HS2, probably followed by Trickstuff.

That’s primarily why I got them, as they were cheap but they (and the TS) both provide the most consistent feel, least amount of noise & have stayed the truest.

I went from Magura to SRAM HS2 and cant fault it, much better then the previous version of SRAM centreline which was awul.

Is it possible to say in % terms how much more resistant to bending our of true 1.85 vs 2 vs 2.3mm rotors are?

If all else is equal then it’s the ratio between the squares, so about 60% stiffer going from 1.8 to 2.3mm

Wow, that's quite a difference. Would be interesting to know where Hope floating rotors sit within that..

A Hope chat I found recently suggested the floating as stiffer than the standard but it didn't make clear if the standard was 1.8 or 2.3.

Found out yesterday that the Magura MDR-P is designed/expected to "rattle" over time so I'm now just looking at one piece rotors. In which case, quality steel, Lazer cut and ground finish, they must all be much of a muchness

Although the EPTA Stage 0 by Braking.com looks like an interesting option.
