Got a 130mm fork destined for my full sus but while it's still winter I want to fit it to my plastic HT, HT is designed for a 100-120mm fork though. If I fit the longer travel fork will i die in a shower of razor sharp carbon shards?

I’d have said no, you’ll be fine. But I put a 130 fork on my ti  hardtail and the head tube cracked. May or may not be cause and effect.

I've got 140mm on my 130mm hardtail and haven't died yet.

Your experience may vary.

I run a 160mm Pike on my Stanton Slackline  designed for up to  140mm and it's been great. That's on a bombproof steel frame though.

Doubt you'll die, you could always run it a tiny % more sagged if you're worried.

I'm running a 160 Fox on my Pace 627, designed for up to 150.  I still live.

Running with a bit more sag than is normal. A very plush feeling fork.

It’s 10mm (minus any sag so probably 7-8mm) FFS!  🙂

There's more than 10mm difference in axle to crown length between different manufacturers 120mm forks alone.

Non issue.

Is it a giant? You will die and they will sue your family.

10mm really isn’t much as said above. I swapped a fox for a rs of the same travel and it had a similar effect. Put a 130mm pike on my segment to replace a 120mm fox 34 and it improved things vastly. I’d only worry if it’s in warranty but even then they’d only know if you told them…

Fork length is more about how hard you're likely to ride the bike rather than the forces transmitted though the same but of frame over the same ground. You'll be fine

It’ll be the maximum length of fork fitted when they stress tested the frame I’d have thought.

Yes but *probably* with a significant margin

I put a 140 in my Orange Gyro with a -2° headset. It was rated for 120mm. It still rides brilliantly some 10yrs later.

Just in case, can you make sure your GoPro is on at all times?

Axle to crown length on forks is generally in the region of 500 mm. A 10 mm increase is 2%. The extra stress on the head tube will be about as much as filling your hydration pack. If you fit some monster DH forks to a lightweight XC frame and go smashing it through rock gardens, you'll break it. If you ride sensibly, 10 mm difference won't be a problem.

Probably, also big difference between 100kg sat on it and 60kg.
I wasn’t suggesting it would be a problem, just that the frame would be tested to certain criteria.

Have a shit, then set the sag.

Then when you want to ride, don't have a shit.

The extra weight will set the sag just right.

I put a 130mm fork on my 1998 Marin East Peak (came with an 80mm fork) in 2007, I'm still riding it.

Gauges how small 8mm is between finger and thumb and wonders why anyone would be concerned.
