Seems 100% Brisker gloves are the common reply to "what winter gloves for the UK". Would you recommend the standard 100% Brisker glove, or the hydromatic? Need a full cold winter UK glove. I'm not sure if there is only one winter 100% brisker glove, or two versions.

Are these the "standard" glove that gets recommended:

Wiggle seem to have them very cheap:

I rotate between both, I started wearing the hydro last week as its been wet and cold most rides. Wear a size L normal Briskers and XL hydros

I use the above in Autumn and Spring - they aren't warm enough for proper cold i.e. Lower than 4 or 5 degrees for me, depends where you are and if you have hot hands

My normal Briskers were teamed up with some thin/stretchy DHB liners that just fit in them last night. Although it is a bit of a squeeze getting them on, there is enough room for them not to be tight across any part of my hand or fingers. I still had pretty much full feeling in my hands after 3 hours in (just) sub-zero temps.

Would you go with the Galibier deep winter gloves instead (-3 to 5 degrees):

Have those as well when it is colder, a bit more bulkier than the 100%.

The problem with mine last night was the cold of the grips was transferred through the very thin underside of the glove. Problem went away after about 1hr (not sure if my circulation improved or the grips warmed up). Temp was about -1.

For almost all mountain bike rides, I find the normal Brisker perfect for the colder months. They aren't as warm once they are wet though, and I suspect that road speeds, once wet, they aren't warm enough.
Not tried the hydro's.

Commuting in at -5 this morning, I'd reccomend https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CLCARULCRG/carnac-waterproof-crab-hand-winter-gloves?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkdSjr8np-wIVk8vtCh16VQjwEAQYASABEgJVnvD_BwE#CLCARULCRG-MED-BLK

Worked well for me for the last few years.

I love my normal Briskers but they're not warm enough below about 4 degrees C. At that point I switch to Galibier Deep Winter gloves, adding liners if its proper cold. I haven't used the crab claw type of glove for many years as they feel clumsy and weird when you're used to one-finger braking, but Decathlon do (or did?) a three-and-one configured overglove which might be worth a go. The Hydromatics are not as warm as the normal Briskers.

The hydros are not as nice to ride in. They seem to have a lot less grip and definitely less feel. However, in the worst of weather they are still pretty decent. The standard brisker does me in all temperatures, only if it's really wet AND cold would I break out the hyrdos.

Normal Briskers for me most of the autumn, winter and spring, silk liners on colder days.
Also have the Hydromatic version, too hot unless it's freezing. Bar feel not as good as normal version. Disappointingly, despite the name they are not waterproof!
Large in both gloves for me.

Those Carnac wouldn't work for those who 1-finger brake...a slightly odd issue, but I tend to ride with a finger over my brake lever constantly...wouldn't work for that (but having used lobster gloves a couple of decades ago, they were absolutely brilliant for keeping fingers warm).
The Galibier ones look better but also look a bit chunky (or thick which is probably a better word), but then I'm just a bit fussy...

You can't get around the feel vs palm insulation unless you run heated grips. It is a trade off like everything else. Lobster gloves for MTB is just crazy if you're riding anything remotely technical.

This. They are by no means a Winter glove. Not in my definition of Winter anyway.

I wore Briskers last night for 2 hours, started at 1 degree and down to -1 when I finished, hands were fine. It was very dry though.

Bought some at that price. My 'winter' gloves are a very old set of Planet X ones. All the warm material seems to have gravitated to half way down the fingers. Took about 20 mins before I could feel the ends of said fingers.

Bascially, Briskers are a softshell. Not stuffed with any "loft" type insulation, so if you think your hand can cope with that in sub zero temps...got for it. Mine can't!

Need a full cold winter UK glove

Briskers not it for me either. I've got two pairs and am happy with them but when it gets freezing I need something warmer.

Are they the right Briskers? Just checked mine and they were called Cold Weather Briskers?

I've got a pair of Briskers and they weren't up to keeping my hands warm on Saturday when it was about 4degrees.

I had to borrow a pair of Sealskin dragon eyes which were brilliant.

Going to pull the pin on a pair myself.

Winter gloves are a really personal thing, people's requirements are wildly different. Briskers are my favourite autumn glove and I'll wear them in pogies, put it that way.

£15 for briskers on that link is a great price! Only in the pink colour but I'm not fussy so going to give them a try.

Did my commute in my Briskers yesterday. Cold at <3 degrees but dry. Tolerable on my fingers but my thumbs were frozen. I think on an mtb where you're moving about a lot they're fine but they're not quite up to 1/2hr on the road when it's properly cold.

A winter glove without a cuff/wrist covering to speak of just does not compute for me.

I've resisted chiming in on 'What Winter Glove' type threads so far. Until now.

As someone with perpetually cold hands, the only real solution I've found is Pogies. They're the only things that can keep my hands consistently warm below around 5 degrees. If you can put up with a few strange looks then they are the ultimate answer.

I use Relevate Designs Williwaws and have never felt the need for anything warmer (although you can get more insulated ones for full on Alaska winter territory), and they have zippered vents on the front to let a bit of air through if they get a bit too toasty.

A winter glove without a cuff/wrist covering or insulation or waterproofing to speak of just does not compute for me.

As above, my Winter might not be the same as everyone else's. Also, being older, my circulation is likely sub-optimal too.

HotPog pogies can be had for around £30.

Are the 100% Hydromatics really not as warm as regular Briskers? I just ordered Hydromatics some as a “less extreme” alternative to my very warm (sweaty) Specialized Element 1.0” !
I also see talk of a “cold weather Brisker” is that just another name for the “regular” Briskers?
Maybe I need Galbier Deep Winter or Endura Primaloft?
People have such varying tolerance to cold!
Is there a decent mtb compatible overglove to go on fir climbs and in the pack fir tech descents? What’s the decathlon one like?
Thanks.

Hydromatic are warmer than the "normal" cold weather Brisker.

Well I use the "normal" and Hydromatics and for me the normal Briskers feel warmer. Clearly we all feel temperature differently!

-4.5 this am when I went out. Unfortunately there is a long downhill road section to get to the trails. My hands were freezing in briskers. But they warmed up once I was in the woods and riding. Temps stayed negative, but without the windchill they were ok. I reckon that's their limit. Any colder, or if it's cold and wet then I wear a thicker waterproof glove, but they don't feel thin on the grips like Briskers.

It is not often that I find the limit of my Briskers (I have both normal and Hydromatics), but when the temp really drops and if it is wet too, then I reach for a pair of these. I also have a silk liner for them if it is proper cold but not yet felt the need while cycling.

Wore Briskers for a quick off-road ride today, dunno what the temp was but there was still frost on the ground. They were ok. Only my thumbs went completely numb after a short time, which made shifting and dropper usage difficult. But they did recover after a short time. Something slightly warmer would've been better. 🙂
