[#3950369]

at the moment i have deore 9 speed setup, been wanting to upgrade to a full xt but not had the funds until now, not sure if it would be worth spending a little extra and going to a 10 speed? at the moment the bike does not get used no were near as much a i would like and have been using only for getting to work but do ride a local trail centre now and again (flat) and go to isle of wight a few times a year which is very hilly.

thanks

I'd only upgrade if everything was worn out. Much better things to spend money on that will actually make the bike better to ride.

what is the advantage of 10 speed, im guessing better gear ratios for climbing etc?
will they fit on the free hub on my hope pro 2 which im now using with a 9 speed cassette?

They only use I see for 10 speed is ye wide ratio cassette which is useful when you use just one chain ring.
With two or three front rings seems to make no differnace to me

It's a much nicer shift than the 9 speed stuff and the new Dyna Sys design means you can shift under much higher load.

It's definitely good, but as above, I'd not upgrade until your current stuff is dead.

sooner or later they'll stop making 9 speed for higher end groupsets to so in a couple of years time I think most of 'us' will end up using 10 speed if we want to keep our heads above Acera level kit.

The only reason I can see for it is because the new clutch mechs are apparently 10 speed only, I like the sound of them so will probably upgrade when they come out.

I find that now I notice a gap in the 9spd cassette ratio vs the 10spd I ride.

It's certainly less of a jump. As mentioned above it's more useful when used on single or double, but that said, it's a treat on my triple setup.

Only worth it if all your current drivetrain is worn out, i.e. minimum requirement for coverting to 10-speed would be a new 10sp rear mech and shifter, 10sp chain and cassette. Unless these are all worn out on your 9 speed set-up i'd say it wasn't worth it.

I've not really noticed any difference between 9 and 10, certainly not in shifting quality. I still prefer 8 for muddy conditions!

However the reason for me to swap would be that like 8 speed stuff it will gradually get harder and harder to get 9 stuff so at some point you will be forced to change.

Personally I wouldnt bother upgrading unless your 9 speed stuff is worn out.
