Lowering the price on this as I could really do with it off my driveway!!
Time to pull my finger out and actually get this listed!
Bought this before COVID hit with the intention of it being a weekend camper/eduro race sleeper van, but unfortunately it never got as much use as intended and just ended up being my daily driver.
It’s going to be a brutally honest review, with all the good, the bad and the ugly listen, but any questions, please don’t hesitate to drop me a message.
It’s the base mode, so comes with all the mod-cons you can imagine. Wind down windows for that upper-body conditioning (very important for mountain biking). CD players to help save the planet by using those old CD’s you’ve got lying around. Cruise control for those big trips to Scotland/Wales where all the good trails are. Aaaaand that’s about it. Less to go wrong!
The good:
- Rear fully insulated and carpeted, – Stayed in this in -3 conditions and was incredibly toasty
- Vinyl flooring is easy to clean and is waterproof
- Blackout curtain blocks out light and lets you go between the back and the cabin without getting wet if it’s chucking it down!
- Single/double pull out bed with foam mattresses, easily fits 2 people or one and a bike
- New timing belt & water pump fitted sub 1000 miles ago, 3 injectors, new alternator and a new battery (that I need to go buy and fit before sale)
- Pirelli Cinturato tyres with a ton of life left – super safe and efficient all year round.
- 4 spare steel wheels with good tread on the tyres included FOC
- Up to 50mpg
The bad:
- 1 injector is on its way out and will need replacing – easy if you know what you’re doing (I don’t and I’d just end up breaking it!). It still drives but shudders under high loads in higher gears.
- No MOT – it will ideally need collecting as the MOT has expired, but once injector and battery is fitted, it should pass fine
- The battery is flat as a pancake and needs replacing, but this is on my todo list over the next week or so!
- I believe a standard alternator rather than a smart alternator was fitted when it was replaced. It’s absolutely not a problem, but doens’t do stop/start in traffic. But what that does mean is replacement batteries are A LOT cheaper if you need to change them in the future.
- 230,000 miles (ish). It’s high milage… no getting around that, but the price reflects that. Most of its miles have been motorways / A-roads rather than being used as a builders van or worse… plasterers!
The Ugly:
- There’s a few paint chips on the bonnet and back door, but they’ve not got any worse since I had it.
- Seats are a bit mucky from being used as a mountain biker’s van.
- The vinyl flooring inside has taken a bit of a beating from having bikes in there, but it never bothered me enough to put new flooring in.
- The rear window cover is somewhat “homemade”, but actually works surprisingly well.
- The Audi alloy wheels are a bit scruffy, not from my parking thankfully, but there are steel wheels included too.
It used to be a parts delivery van for VW for most of its miles, so was well maintained for them. Every time it went in for an MOT they were always surprised is was in such good condition for its’ milage.
Basically, most of what can go wrong (minus the injector that needs sorting) has had money spent and fixed. Only reason for sale is I replaced it with a more family-friendly van with rear seats. It’s the perfect van for trips to the trail centre or riding weekends away, with plenty of space for storage, and super easy drives.
Oh and it’s a private sale, so there’s no additional VAT added or anything daft like that!
