This award is about people. Who is getting bums on saddles? Who is creating the opportunity for new people to discover mountain bikes? These are the projects, campaigns or other initiatives that are helping build the MTB community.
Thanks for your nominations in this category. Here are the finalists…
Showing that even a relatively small company can make a difference, Cotic Bikes pledges 0.5% of their turnover to supporting trail advocacy groups. Cotic has helped out a wide range of voluntary organisations and projects, such as Trash Free Trails, Ride Sheffield, and the Bole Hills BMX Track. They’ve also established the popular Cotic Women of Steel rides, open to all women – not just Cotic owners.
Cycling UK is committed to encouraging more people to cycle, and to making cycling a better experience for those that choose it. Its lobbying and legal challenge activities seek to hold those in power to account, and they’re not afraid to be forthright in their views. It’s not all bike lanes and commuters, or even beards and panniers; they’re committed to increasing access to cycling for everyone, and that extends to pushing for better access to the countryside. Their Trails for Wales campaign continues to push the Welsh Government to increase access for mountain bikers.
Established by Hope Technology, Hope WMN ambassadors seek to inspire more women to try riding bikes, and to experience the benefits it brings. The hundreds of smiling faces to be spotted across a range of guided rides, events, and races such as the Hope WMN enduro, suggests that it’s working.
If there’s a project or ride group that’s working to give more people more opportunities to access the outdoors, there’s a fair chance you’ll spot some komoot branding. Providing support to a huge array of events, individuals and projects, komoot is going beyond its route planning roots to help build a bigger community of outdoor lovers.
Specialized’s Soil Searching project has helped trail builders across the world create new trails and learn new skills. It’s also put a spotlight on climate change, and how it is affecting mountain biking. In London, Specialized’s Tracks and Trails project offered a 6-week scholarship to young riders to develop trail riding skills and experience, keeping a bike upon completion of the sessions.
