No Spectators for 2021 Fort William DH World Cup

by 2

If you were hoping to head to the Highlands and watch the World Cup at Fort William this year, we have some bad news for you.

Bad news downhill fans! An official statement has been posted by the organisers of the Fort William DH World Cup stating that IF the race goes ahead it will be held without spectators! That’s right this news is a possible double whammy for downhill fans and highlights the uncertainty around race events still.

Keep reading for the official statement:

FORT WILLIAM WORLD CUP COULD STILL GO AHEAD – BUT WITHOUT SPECTATORS

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup organisers today confirmed that if the event takes place at Nevis Range, Fort William on the scheduled dates of 22-23 May, it will be without spectators.

“Whilst we all desperately want a return to the usual Fort William crowds and the amazing atmosphere they create, despite the progress of vaccination and planned easing of lockdown restrictions, the reality is that the World Cup on 22 and 23 May will not be possible with spectators in attendance.

Spectators have been at the heart of every World Cup and have made it the much admired Classic it has become. A closed event will never be the same – but as with every other sport, if the competition is to take place it must be under very different conditions.

We continue to work with the UCI and relevant authorities to find a way of running the World Cup behind closed doors but this still presents numerous challenges that are, as yet, unresolved.”

All existing ticket holders will be contacted separately. They will be able to claim a full refund or carry forward to 2022 when there will hopefully be a full return to normality and crowds cheering on the best riders in the world.

Disappointing – but not that surprising. It has become an annual couple of days for our family, schlepping around the hill for the event and meeting the (lovely) pro’s as an inspiration to the boys.
Let’s hope it goes ahead in some form, and that in 2022 we can make even more NOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE!

No big crowds in Scotland in May isn’t really any surprise is it? Completed vaccination roll out will be needed before anything like this is even considered.
