TRP DH Evo brake

New TRP DH-R Evo disc brakes are powerful enough for a homemade Rampage

by 2

TRP has released 2 pairs of high-performance disc brake systems for both eMTB and DH applications, but are they powerful enough for a homemade Rampage?

If you’re wondering what kept Fairclough in control while doing this the answer is massive amounts of skill, but we suppose those new TRP stoppers help too.

TRP has released details of the new TRP DH-R Evo disc brake and TRP E-MTB Brake 2 new systems designed to give a ton of power to riders fingertips using a host of new features.

Both brakes are compatible with new standard 223 x 2.3mm discs, something that we saw a lot of last year in the 2019 World Cup, and TRP claims that on a DH bike with 29in wheels it makes a lot of sense to have that larger diameter disc, or in the case of an eMTB the extra weight requires the larger braking surface.

Both brakes share a lot of the same updates, and can be used for eMTB, but the eMTB specific version aims to bring many of the same features to market at a lower price. We haven’t received UK pricing yet.

The new TRP DH-R Evo brake system has been revamped with new features to make it powerful enough for racing and ergonomic enough that riders can make the most of that power.

For starters, the new system is compatible with larger 223 x 2.3mm rotors which TRP says is great for 29ers, but obviously, you’ll need to check your fork specifications to see if you can make use of those monster anchors.

Clamping down on those larger discs is a new brake pad with improved resin compound that has a claimed better performance and shorter bed-in time.

The new pads sit in the E-Caliper, and as the name suggests this is the same 4 piston body ad the eMTB brake. The calliper is made from forged alloy and has been designed to better oil flow, heat transfer and improved bleeding. Changes have been made to ensure a faster response at the rear calliper too. To prevent flex with those large discs, TRP is offering new CNC brake adapters.

The brake also gets larger 5mm hoses for increased stiffness for better pressure and increased heat stability. New mineral oil flows though those new hoses, the updated formula is better at higher temperatures and has decreased viscosity for better flow. TRP also states that the new system is now even easier to bleed but doesn’t go into details.

At the lever end of the system, there’s a new 9mm piston and the leverage ratio has been adjusted to bring more power and to help reduce arm pump. There’s also a new ergonomic lever blade, machined for grip, and a lightweight lever body.

We’ve already spoken to TRP about getting a set in for test and once lockdown is over we should be able to get on these new brakes and see what they can do. We won’t be leaping off any houses though!
