Kenda and Aaron Gwin launch the predictable and fast rolling Kenda Pinner Pro

by 6

The Kenda Pinner Pro is an all-new dry weather gravity tyre developed with the help of downhill legend Aaron Gwin for fast rolling and cornering performance.

Aaron Gwin is well known for working with sponsors to develop products to his liking, so it’s hardly surprising to see that he and tyre sponsor, Kenda, have been putting their heads together to create a new race tyre.

The Pinner Pro has been designed and optimized for hardpack track conditions as we see at World Cup tracks like Leogang and Lenzerheide, and is said to work best in rocky/rooty, and loose over hard conditions.

Kenda has developed the tread pattern to ensure that there is a consistent contact patch when leaning the bike into corners. This creates fast and predictable cornering, while also offering 16% better rolling resistance than the Hellkat AGC.

The inner tread uses a ramped centre knob to minimize rolling resistance with a low void pattern for stability and traction. Large braking edges boost braking performance while sipes have been added to bite into the trail under cornering and braking loads.

Of course, a tyre is only as good as long as it can stay inflated and so Kenda has developed the Pinner Pro to offer a claimed 40% higher puncture protection than similar DH tyres.

We have the AGC version in for testing.

Kenda is offering the new Pinner Pro in two casing options, AGC and ATC. The AGC (Gravity) casing weighs in at 1290g for a 29 x 2.4in tyre and is aimed at downhill racing and gravity applications. The construction consists of a lightweight Kenda Vector Shield under the sidewalls and tread area to protect against cuts and punctures.

For riders wanting the same grip but at a lower weight then the Pinner Pro with ATC (Trail) construction will probably be a better choice. At the time of writing, we have the AGC model in for testing, as the ATC wasn’t available.

The Pinner Pro uses a dual-layer rubber compound set-up with a firmer rubber used for the base and soft compound over the top for boosting grip. ATC version tyres will also have a dual tread construction with a softer shoulder and firmer centre.
