Robin Williams Retro Bike Bonanza

by 4

Imagine being a world famous actor. Imagine you really like bikes (you might not have to imagine this bit). Imagine you’ve got the cash to buy that n+1, and that one, and that one. And that storage space is not a problem. Where would that lead?

Well, in the case of the late Robin Williams, it led to a pretty spectacular collection of bikes. Perhaps reflecting his personality, there’s a fair sprinkling of the weird and wacky in there. And it’s now all up for auction, in aid of the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

It’s worth a look at the auction page even if you don’t fancy buying anything, as there is decent length article about Robin Williams and his interest in bikes. There are also many more bikes than we’re showing you here.

Condition report says ‘Moderate wear. Rear shock leaking fluid and may need new seals’. But we’re not sure if we’d want to ride it, or just sit and gaze at it.

A full suspension road bike. Not one for the hill climbs then. But it’s tempting to buy it just to see how wrong it actually feels.

If Batman rode a bike, surely this is what it would look like?

Now this is a bike you could ride to the pub. Getting home again might be a little more interesting however.

Carbon fibre frame with rear triangle (or whatever shape that is) made of 100% Terminator. It needs new tyres, but never fear, because the ‘seat’ (the auction’s choice of words) is in very good condition.

Head on over to the auction, take a look at all the bikes. Make sure you have another window open for when your boss comes over an hour later to check how that report is doing. Which is your favourite? Which one would you buy? And do let us know if you do actually buy one!

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Getting a live sound bite before Williams embarked upon a 56-mile race, an unsuspecting TV-reporter asked how he would feel after the ride. Williams lit up: ““How will I be feeling? Thanks for asking! One thing I know for sure…there will be a river of sweat flowing down the crack of my ass the size of Niagara Falls …..oh, is this live TV?”

    The prices!
Bog standard Fuji Track at $650*, Pashley Guvnor at well over $1,000, and what appears to be a Chinese Flying Pigeon at $1,900

And there’s still plenty time to go.

*If anyone wants a mint one of these exactly like the auction, I can help out. 🙂

The Full Sus roadie looks an interesting ride as the suspension is all in the handle bar and the seat stay, so the actual power output should be fairly normal really… the concept of a floating top half is a little odd though…

Velotron is worth it just for the name!
