The hit event of 2015, Epic Cymru, as covered in Singletrack issue 101, is set to return to South Wales, this summer, with entries due to be released on Sunday January 17th and riders from around the world expected to attend.
Epic Cymru – a five-day Mountain Bike stage race – will encompass several styles of riding and is aimed at the entire spectrum of riders, from Cross Country (XC) to Enduro and Downhill, appealing to the ‘weekend warrior’ as much as the Pro-Elite stars. Last year’s event attracted riders from 12 countries around the World and as far afield as Japan and the USA including several top Pro-elite racers (like overall winner Jason Moeschler and enduro clown Mark Weir) and many amateur riders.
Event date: July 30th to August 3rd, 2016
According to event organiser, Matt Page, himself a seasoned endurance racer, the 2016 event offers a new route and with riding areas never featured in any event previously and will include a mix of natural and man-made trails. Famous South Wales riding spots including Bike Park Wales, Afan Forest Park, Rheola Forest & Margam Park will also visited, with the five day event taking place from July 30th to August 3rd.
The race format will include timed sections and linking sections over the five days, with the race decided by over 15 timed sections, with separate Cross Country and Downhill sections. Stage distances will be a manageable – but still challenging – 40-60km, with an emphasis on providing fun, technical and fast riding throughout. The 2016 event is supported by Stages Cycling, Lezyne and Exposure Lights, as well as a certain Singletrack Magazine.
Epic Cymru has released a video showcasing the riding featured in the 2015 edition of the five-day race;
