The Sheffield Walk of Fame, that is. The Star report that he’s the latest person to win a star on it, alongside new civic awards for twenty unsung heroes of the city. Peaty joins Jessica Ennis, Def Leppard, Joe Cocker and a host of others.

In just under a month, he’ll be running Peaty’s Bike Bonanza in the city.

The Star write of the new star recipient:

It will be Steve Peat, a world champion mountain biker who was born in Chapeltown and has held the global title on several occasions.

The unveiling ceremony for his star in the Sheffield Legends scheme – which has returned after a year’s break due to the Tour de France – will take place next month as he joins the likes of Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill and actor Sean Bean.

Former plumber and dad Mr Peat said: ”It is a huge honour to be selected by the people of Sheffield to join some of my heroes on Sheffield’s ‘walk of fame’.

“It is always great to be acknowledged by the people from my home town, as I have always been proud to represent Sheffield and this country wherever I’ve competed around the world.”

David started mountain biking in the 90’s, by which he means “Ineptly jumping a Saracen Kili Racer off anything available in a nearby industrial estate”. After growing up and living in some extremely flat places, David moved to Yorkshire specifically for the mountain biking. This felt like a horrible mistake at first, because the hills are so steep, but you get used to them pretty quickly. Previously, David trifled with road and BMX, but mountain bikes always won. He’s most at peace battering down a rough trail, quietly fixing everything that does to a bike, or trying to figure out if that one click of compression damping has made things marginally better or worse. The inept jumping continues to this day.
