As reported 1st on our sister site Grit.cx Trek have issued an urgent recall notice for owners of any Trek bikes equipped with QR skewers and Disc Brakes. The issue is with open QR levers that can go beyond the 180 degree mark and potentially foul the disc rotor causing a potentially dangerous situation that could eject the front wheel or lock the wheel and eject the rider. Bad news either way. This illustration, er… illustrates the problem.
Trek are keen to point out that a correctly done up QR is perfectly safe. It’s only if you forget the do it up properly and it opens during your ride or you forget to do it up at all that there is a risk to the rider. But then who among us have never set off riding only to have someone point to our axle that we’ve totally forgotten to fasten?
The full recall notice is here. If you have a Trek with QR skewers and discs then you really need to read it and get your bike checked out asap at your local Trek dealer. Trek are offering £15 Bontrager vouchers for any affected owners ($20 for US owners and €20 for European owners)

So: if you don’t do up your QR properly you may well have a big accident?
Who knew?
Reminds me of the Yank who had cruise control in his camper van so he popped into the back to make a brew while motoring down the interstate. Just waiting for the ‘handlebars dangerous if not connected to stem’ scare stories next……doh!
